Uncovering the species complex of Black Pepper wild relative Piper arboreum

Project summary:

The genus Piper is one of the most species-rich plant genera in existence with somewhere between 2000-3000 species. A major difficulty in gaining a better understanding of the evolution and diversity of Piper is that many species are not fully resolved. The goals of my research are i) to revise the taxonomy of Piper sect. Hemipodium, using both morphological and molecular data ii) generate a phylogeny of this species complex, and iii) provide a methodology for future studies within Piper that facilitates the clarification of species delimitations and relationships.
