Reconstructing the evolution of the order Gleicheniales based on
morphological characters: the contribution of fossil taxa.

The monophyly of the order Gleicheniales was questioned by recent phylogeny results based on high-throughput sequencing techniques. To clarify its relationships, morphological studies based on fossil specimens from the Museo Egidio Feruglio will be carried out and included in a morphological matrix with fossil and extant species for phylogenetic analysis.

The concept and idea of the project are strong, but the proposal is poorly written and contains many vague statements. For example: "The final results of this research will be published in international scientific journals, with a review paper on the Gleicheniales flora of the Jurassic of Chubut, and the descriptions of new species. Images of these specimens will be uploaded to relevant databases." (There is no mention of which journals are targeted or which databases will be used.). The structure of the proposal could be enhanced. The project’s aim is primarily presented in the Materials and Methods section, while the Objectives section focuses too much on methodology. A clearer distinction between the research aim, objectives, and methods is necessary to improve the coherence and readability of the proposal. Applicant has no previous publications. Funds would enable networking with other researchers. Although the visit is not across national borders, its between regions within a large country. There is an outreach element expressed in writing an article to the general public, great to see this.
