Systematics of Neotropical beach-loving ringless Amanita sect. Vaginatae from Mexico
Project summary:
The Amanita sect. Vaginatae is the most diverse of the genus. Taxonomic studies using molecular data have led the discovery of new species in this group. In Mexico, only two Neotropical species have been described, 42 years ago. These are Amanita dunicola and Amanita yucatanensis, which grow on beaches and have so far only been recorded at the type locality. They may therefore be endemic species of the Yucatán Peninsula. These species could be at risk of extinction due to real estate and tourism development in their habitat, particularly deforestation. More information about them are required.
