Improvement of the Herbario Sur Peruano (HSP) and revaluation of its collection

Peru

Database, Process backlog, Conserve, Other

Cost (USD):

2000

HSP

Instituto Cientifico Michael Owen Dillon

Objective:

• Carry out the entry of botanical samples to the collection of the Herbario Sur peruano(HSP).
• Update the catalog of species and botanical material deposited in the HSP.
• Improve the current conditions of the botanical material deposited in the HSP.
• Carry out field trips that allow the increase in the collection of HSP.
• Promote the training of young botanists in the study of the vascular flora of the region.

Timetable:

The project will be developed in 9 months, during the first month the purchase of material (mounting paper) and the hiring of personnel will be carried out. From the second to seventh month, the stored samples (ca. 3000 specimens) will be herborized and entry into the collection. During this process, the digitization of its collection data set (label information) will also be carried out. We expect that an average of 500 samples per month will be added into the collection. In the third and fourth month, field trips will be planned in order to collect at least 500 more samples. These samples will be processed with the help of volunteers and young botanists captured on field trips. The data obtained from these samples, as well as the missing data from the collection (ca. 2000 specimens) will be digitized in the eighth month. On the other hand, the maintenance of the collection will be carried out throughout all the process. Finally, in the ninth month, the verification of the proper processing of the samples will be carried out, as well as an evaluation of the total state of the collection, including the preparation of the first catalog of the material deposited in the Herbarium.

Scoring Rubric

Reviewer's name:

Collection Improvement (max. 120 points)

  • Facilitating access to the physical collections by digitization (e.g., data entry, setting up database structure with an outline of the platform to be used, purchasing equipment, and imaging specimens) – up to 30 points.

  • Enhancing physical collections by improving the conservation status of specimens in the herbarium (e.g., better folders, protecting covers, mounting paper, labeling, etc.) – up to 30 points.

  • Curating specimens (e.g., updating families, species identification, identifying types) – up to 20 points.

  • Increasing our understanding of the flora or funga by making new herbarium specimens available, such as processing of backlog or collecting and mounting of new specimens from understudied sites – up to 20 points.

  • Securing collections by distribution of duplicates (or orphan collections) to other regional or international herbaria or shipping endangered collections to another herbarium – up to 20 points.

Methods & Funding (max. 40 points)

  • Match between the proposed budget and methods for the aims described – up to 10 points.

  • Perceived need, the extent to which the project will benefit from IAPT funding: e.g., due to active floristic work or contribution to poorly collected sites, due to threatened conditions of collections, and for the degree of involvement of others (outreach and education). We give more points for herbaria in low- and middle-income countries – up to 20 points.

  • Sharing duplicate specimens with other herbaria – up to 10 points.

Broader Impacts (max. 40 points)

  • Degree of regional importance of the collection or the taxonomic importance of the targeted collection – up to 10 points.

  • The project will yield durable benefits (specimens, digitized metadata, databases, websites) – up to 15 points.

  • The project involves outreach/mentoring and broad dissemination – up to 15 points.

Plan:

The Herbario Sur peruano counts with 3000 samples that have not been entered in the collection fur to lack of funds. The funding would allow us to hire personnel and purchase mounting materials (such as mounting paper, tape, etc.) to complete the specimen preparation and their addition to the collection. In order to build the species catalogue of the HSP herbarium we will digitize the data associated to ca. 5000 specimens (label information), these data will be added to our current database of ca. 10000 specimens using a custom database management system in Microsoft Access. The database could later be exported to platforms like GBIF and be used to create distribution maps for example.
We also plan to improve the conditions of the herbarium through the maintenance of cabinets, re-labelling and re-sorting of specimen folders as needed. Finally, we plan to organize field expeditions to add new samples to the collection, allowing the participation of students and general public. During these field trips we will emphasize the importance of plant collections (and natural history collections in general) and how are these plants processed from the moment they are taken from the field up to the entry of the specimen into the collection. We will also recruit students that are interested in the study of the region’s vascular flora, as well as volunteers willing to help with the activities of the herbarium. We are hopeful to attract young people interested in science and conservation.
