Breaking the ice: building photosystem and starting digitization of LWS herbarium

Objective:
1. To build digitization complex basing on Canon EOS 250D camera and Canon EF-S 35 mm lens.
2. To initiate digitization of LWS herbarium starting from endemics distributed in Ukrainian Carpathians (2031 vouchers).
3. To make an initial database of the herbarium vouchers deposited in LWS.
4. To share digitized materials with scientists around the world by uploading them to JACQ virtual herbarium, Data Centre Biodiversity of Ukraine, and UkrBin database.
Timetable:
March 2021 - buying equipment, building and testing photosystem
April 2021 – making photos of vouchers of endemics, processing of photos
May-June 2021 – transcription of the labels, completing the database
July 2021 – data verification and cleansing, extraction of GPS coordinates
August-September 2021 - uploading data and photos to JACQ, Data Centre Biodiversity of Ukraine, and UkrBin
October-November 2021 - preparation of a paper about the project with details on building of photosystem and gathered experience

LWS herbarium is one of the oldest in Ukraine, holding about 116,000 vouchers. However, it struggles with a lack of financial support for many years, making it hard to maintain. In 2013 we already digitized several type specimens for the virtual herbarium JACQ. Applying for this grant, I want to continue digitization of our herbarium.
To reach this ambitious target, I want to build a small digitization system based on a Canon photo camera. It should be the most cost-efficient solution for such a small herbarium like LWS because we will never buy such professional solutions as Picturae or Microtek ObjectScan. Moreover, the modularity and availability of parts for such a photosystem will guaranty its long-standing and maintainability. Our herbarium digitization I want to start from endemics distributed in Ukrainian Carpathians because this group of plants is one of the most interesting for the international scientific community. After that, I want to database digitized vouchers on a local computer and then share the processed data in three main ways - international virtual herbarium JACQ with further data access to GBIF, Data Centre Biodiversity of Ukraine, and UkrBin. It should guaranty free access and prolonged preservation of data.
Being curator of LWS, I am not getting any salary for this. However, I do not ask for any money for labor because I am ready to do this for free. I just ask you to help me to build a photosystem which will make this work possible.
