The National Herbarium of Trinidad and Tobago is the second oldest herbarium in the Americas, founded in 1818. Some of the oldest gatherings were collected between 1818 and 1820. Few duplicates are available outside the country, and the collection includes several type collections. We don't know the exact number of specimens we have: the old accession books estimate around 50000, but we estimate the actual number could be around 40000.
Our herbarium data (so far, only 7500 specimens) are available at the Symbiota website (https://serv.biokic.asu.edu/neotrop/plantae/collections/misc/collprofiles.php?collid=146&emode=1).
In addition, we are including photos from the plants in the field in the same database. We propose to hire a temporary staff member (1/4 time) to continue this process, with an estimated salary of 250-300 US montly. The herbarium will provide the necessary related stuff (i.e., laptop, camera, glue, paper, etc)
If we get the grant, the Herbarium-University can double the amount (for a 2000 US grant, University can provide 2000 US more,), allowing us to hire somebody for a longer time, doubling the number of specimens. We are planning to do a new Flora; the database is mandatory before starting.
This person will database the image, print the barcodes, photograph the specimen, and finally upload them to Symbiota.
If the money is sent directly to the University, a 15% overhead fee must be deducted. In other ways (i.e., Paypal), we can use all the Money.
