Digitization of MPUC: the Pró-Mata reserve collection
Brazil
Digitally image
Cost (USD):
2000
MPUC
Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul
Objective:
Despite being linked to a museum, MPUC herbarium does not have its own budget, it only receives resources for the maintenance of the collection. Also, as MPUC does not perform scientific research, the collection ends up being underused, and we believe that this is enhanced by not providing digitized images. Our objective is to start the MPUC digitization process by exsiccates from the Pró-Mata reserve (https://www.pucrs.br/en/pro-mata/). We intend to expand the use and qualification of the MPUC collection and, at the same time, contribute to the qualification of an important conservation unit.
Timetable:
We intend to start this digitization process with one technician that can dedicate two days in the collection and also allocate one biologist student that has a scholarship to work 20 hours per week. We think that the most time consuming should be the curation pre-digitization, because is difficult to predict. We estimated that, after the student is trained, would be reasonable to curate and image 50 specimens per week. The imaging process should be faster than the curation. This will lead to almost conclude the Pró-Mata collection in a year, being very conservative.
Scoring Rubric
Reviewer's name:
Collection Improvement (max. 120 points)
-
Facilitating access to the physical collections by digitization (e.g., data entry, setting up database structure with an outline of the platform to be used, purchasing equipment, and imaging specimens) – up to 30 points.
-
Enhancing physical collections by improving the conservation status of specimens in the herbarium (e.g., better folders, protecting covers, mounting paper, labeling, etc.) – up to 30 points.
-
Curating specimens (e.g., updating families, species identification, identifying types) – up to 20 points.
-
Increasing our understanding of the flora or funga by making new herbarium specimens available, such as processing of backlog or collecting and mounting of new specimens from understudied sites – up to 20 points.
-
Securing collections by distribution of duplicates (or orphan collections) to other regional or international herbaria or shipping endangered collections to another herbarium – up to 20 points.

Methods & Funding (max. 40 points)
-
Match between the proposed budget and methods for the aims described – up to 10 points.
-
Perceived need, the extent to which the project will benefit from IAPT funding: e.g., due to active floristic work or contribution to poorly collected sites, due to threatened conditions of collections, and for the degree of involvement of others (outreach and education). We give more points for herbaria in low- and middle-income countries – up to 20 points.
-
Sharing duplicate specimens with other herbaria – up to 10 points.

Broader Impacts (max. 40 points)
-
Degree of regional importance of the collection or the taxonomic importance of the targeted collection – up to 10 points.
-
The project will yield durable benefits (specimens, digitized metadata, databases, websites) – up to 15 points.
-
The project involves outreach/mentoring and broad dissemination – up to 15 points.

Plan:
Until this moment, MPUC does not have any images from exsiccates, so we plan to start the digitization process by the collection from Pró-Mata reserve, which is about 3,000 accessions considering Angiosperms and Gymnosperms. We choose start by Pró-Mata collection because it is a Center for Research and Nature Conservation that belongs to the Atlantic Forest Biosphere´s Reserve and have a very expressive biodiversity (https://www.pucrs.br/en/pro-mata/). Pró-Mata We intend to contribute to the knowledge of its flora, which will be more accessible to the researchers. The process will start by a pre-digitization curation. The first step is to extract a report from Specify to guide us to find exsiccates in the collection, selecting the Pró-Mata reserve as locality. This list will be cheked in a plataform of Brazilian Flora and The Plant List to verify the status of the plant names. The second step is to locate the exsiccates from the list to perform corrections and reparation, if necessary. As our collection is organized in an alphabetical order of the families (following APG 2016), we will organize this report at the same way. Curation concluded, we will start the imaging process. We have a table to be a station to place the camera to capture the images, but we do not have a camera yet. In this station, we need also to improve illumination. As the images are taken, we intend to rename manually to link do the collection, that is already available at GBIF and speciesLink Plataform.
