Fundacao Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatistica

Objective:

The objectives of this project are: 1) undertake a rapid evaluation of the conservation status of the HRB collection; 2) Count the existing specimens within the collection. While the HRB collection is databased with its information available in the internet there is a lack of knowledge of the actual amount of specimens currently contained in it; 3) pack organize and transfere the collection its new location; 4) organize the collection within the new herbarium cabinets.

Timetable:

Part of the collection has been packaged already (ca. 1/3 of the specimens). We secured resources for the acquisition of ca. 2/3 of the boxes needed.
month 1 (est. January) - ordering boxes (takes around 15 days for boxed to be manufactured and delivered), ordering bubble wrap and tape. Hiring helper.
Given that we still have some boxes we will continue the packaging with those available.
We estimate that the analysis and packaging of the material will take approximately 2 to 3 months.
months 2,3 and 4 - packaging
Thus by April the material will be ready for transport.
month 4 and 5 - rental of refrigerated container (for cold crashing the material for at least 5 days), transport and cold storage.
month 5 (May) and 6 (June) - organizing the collection within the new herbarium space and cabinets.

Scoring Rubric

Reviewer's name:

Collection Improvement (max. 120 points)

  • Facilitating access to the physical collections by digitization (e.g., data entry, setting up database structure with an outline of the platform to be used, purchasing equipment, and imaging specimens) – up to 30 points.

  • Enhancing physical collections by improving the conservation status of specimens in the herbarium (e.g., better folders, protecting covers, mounting paper, labeling, etc.) – up to 30 points.

  • Curating specimens (e.g., updating families, species identification, identifying types) – up to 20 points.

  • Increasing our understanding of the flora or funga by making new herbarium specimens available, such as processing of backlog or collecting and mounting of new specimens from understudied sites – up to 20 points.

  • Securing collections by distribution of duplicates (or orphan collections) to other regional or international herbaria or shipping endangered collections to another herbarium – up to 20 points.

Methods & Funding (max. 40 points)

  • Match between the proposed budget and methods for the aims described – up to 10 points.

  • Perceived need, the extent to which the project will benefit from IAPT funding: e.g., due to active floristic work or contribution to poorly collected sites, due to threatened conditions of collections, and for the degree of involvement of others (outreach and education). We give more points for herbaria in low- and middle-income countries – up to 20 points.

  • Sharing duplicate specimens with other herbaria – up to 10 points.

Broader Impacts (max. 40 points)

  • Degree of regional importance of the collection or the taxonomic importance of the targeted collection – up to 10 points.

  • The project will yield durable benefits (specimens, digitized metadata, databases, websites) – up to 15 points.

  • The project involves outreach/mentoring and broad dissemination – up to 15 points.

Plan:

Background: The HRB herbarium has about 61,800 specimens, it was housed at the Salvador Botanic Garden, and currently is stored in an external location. To meet with the objectives proposed we need hire a helper (as I am the only worker at the herbarium), acquire packaging material (cardboard boxes, bubble wrap, and tape), rent a refrigerated container. The activities related to the conservation status of the collection, counting and packing will be done simultaneously. As the specimens are analyzed for their conservation status, they will be counted and total computed by Family and Genus. The conservation status will be recorded on specific sheet, while the counting will be done on another table. After this portion of the work bundles of specimens will be wrapped on bubble wrap, and placed in the cardboard box, in a manner analogous to packaging for shipping loans. The contents of each box will be annotated (families and genus), this data sheet will have 3 copies, one of which will go in the box, while the other two will be placed on a secure location. Data will be transferred to a computer spreadsheet. Each box will have an individual identifying number, and will also be identified by the number of the original cabinet from which the plants were removed. Once these steps have been done boxes will be stored and the location of each box will be mapped. Boxes will then be gradually transported to the new facilities, cold treated and organized (APGIV) in new cabinets.
