Digitalisation of a highly specialized collection (UPOS): towards an online taxonomic atlas of Cyperaceae

Spain

Cost (USD):

2000

UPOS

Universidad Pablo de Olavide

Objective:

1) Digitalisation of UPOS herbarium specimens using high quality photographic equipment detailed in the attached budget
2) High-resolution photographs of taxonomically diagnostic traits in a selection of specimens (at least 5) representing each Cyperaceae species included at UPOS
3) Contributing digitised herbarium specimens to international taxonomic repositories (JSTOR, GBIF)
4) Building an online photographic repository including all digitized herbarium specimens linked with their corresponding detailed diagnostic photos and, if available, photos of living plants taken in the field, to esta

Timetable:

We plan to conduct our digitation project in four steps once the grant is received. The time allotted for each step is an estimation that takes into account the limited human resources available (only one technician) at UPOS herbarium.
1) Purchase of the equipment, reception of the shipments, installation and tuning up of the photography station. Up to 2 months.
2) Digitise a representative selection of UPOS Cyperaceae herbarium specimens covering the taxonomic and geographic variability of species (at least 5 specimens per species if available). Digitise detailed diagnostic characters from these selected specimens to be included in the online taxonomic Atlas of Cyperaceae. About 12 months.
3) Digitise the remainder specimens of Cyperaceae at UPOS and make them publicly accessible through JSTOR plants and/or GBIF. About 18 months.
4) Digitize all the non-Cyperaceae collection at UPOS and make it accessible through JSTOR and/or GBIF. About 12 months.

Scoring Rubric

Reviewer's name:

Collection Improvement (max. 120 points)

  • Facilitating access to the physical collections by digitization (e.g., data entry, setting up database structure with an outline of the platform to be used, purchasing equipment, and imaging specimens) – up to 30 points.

  • Enhancing physical collections by improving the conservation status of specimens in the herbarium (e.g., better folders, protecting covers, mounting paper, labeling, etc.) – up to 30 points.

  • Curating specimens (e.g., updating families, species identification, identifying types) – up to 20 points.

  • Increasing our understanding of the flora or funga by making new herbarium specimens available, such as processing of backlog or collecting and mounting of new specimens from understudied sites – up to 20 points.

  • Securing collections by distribution of duplicates (or orphan collections) to other regional or international herbaria or shipping endangered collections to another herbarium – up to 20 points.

Methods & Funding (max. 40 points)

  • Match between the proposed budget and methods for the aims described – up to 10 points.

  • Perceived need, the extent to which the project will benefit from IAPT funding: e.g., due to active floristic work or contribution to poorly collected sites, due to threatened conditions of collections, and for the degree of involvement of others (outreach and education). We give more points for herbaria in low- and middle-income countries – up to 20 points.

  • Sharing duplicate specimens with other herbaria – up to 10 points.

Broader Impacts (max. 40 points)

  • Degree of regional importance of the collection or the taxonomic importance of the targeted collection – up to 10 points.

  • The project will yield durable benefits (specimens, digitized metadata, databases, websites) – up to 15 points.

  • The project involves outreach/mentoring and broad dissemination – up to 15 points.

Plan:

The herbarium of Pablo de Olavide University (UPOS; Seville, Spain) is a small and relatively recent herbarium which was founded in 2002. It is listed by Index Herbariorum as well as by other important international institutions related with herbaria (Global Plant Initiative-JSTOR, Asociación de herbarios Ibero-Macaronésicos AHIM, GBIF). Its collections are characterized by a high taxonomic specialization in family Cyperaceae, the third most biodiverse monocot family, since this is the research lineage of most members in the Botany Area of the University. Therefore, although the total number of specimens at UPOS is relatively low (c. 15000), it is probably among the 5-10 largest Cyperaceae collection worldwide (c. 5000 specimens). Cyperaceae specimens at UPOS cover a wide taxonomic and geographic variability, with a special emphasis in the megadiverse genus Carex and the Mediterranean basin, the Afrotropics and the Neotropics. Specimens have been steadily incorporated since its foundation through collecting by members of the Botany area or by exchange with other herbaria and scientific collaborators. Being the only herbarium specialized in sedges managed by an expert team of cyperologists has resulted in the collection with the highest number of accurately identify specimens yet to be released to the rest of the world.
We plan to use the requested grant to acquire high quality equipment to digitise UPOS herbarium collection, with an emphasis in Cyperaceae. This will be conduc
