Cayes Botanical Garden (CBG)
Objective:
Haiti has one herbarium, created in 1931 with the Ekman collections and others biologists. Unfortunately in June 2020, a fire burned 80% of the specimens. Except those of Ekman who were in six anti-fire cabinets donated to New Botanical Garden.
Cayes Botanical Garden ( GBG) team was in charge to evaluate the fire impact. The result, the rest of Ekman specimens are in a bad shape, severely affected by smoke and insects.
The project's objective are:
1. To reinforce the collaboration with CBG and UF.
2. Organize a field trip to collect rare Haitian plant herbarium specimens to send UF
Timetable:
To organize the field trip we need one week of planning. In this, we will rent a car, select materials to collect, people to participate and hotels to stay.
2. Field trip for collecting and pressing
Four people from the garden will participate in the field trip for six days.
3. Shipping
All the specimens will pack and send to Florida University Herbarium, one week after the field trip
4. Labeling
UF will be in charge to label all the specimens and classify them.

Field trip
In june 2020, Cayes Botanical Garden (CBG) did a great field trip to Grand’Anse and found a lot of rare plants that were collected by Ekman for more than 100 years. We didn’t collect herbarium specimens because we didn’t have an herbarium to send them. Recently, we have a non formal agreement with UF. They accept to store our specimens. Based on that we will start collecting duplicate herbarium specimens to send them and make plans to bring them back to Haiti in the future. With this fund, we plan to do this field trip again to collect herbarium specimens. We plan to collect more than 300 duplicate specimens to send to UF.
Tools to do fields
To realize this field trip we will buy some specific materials such as press, dryer, carton ect… The garden will buy these items in his own fund.
Shipping herbarium specimens to UF
All the specimens will ship to UF by using Fedex, the garden will pay for that.
Labeling
All specimens will label and classify by UF with no cost.
