Objective:

The project started in fall 2015 with the goal of completing the project by June 2022. The specimens (around 4000) were collected in Italy, Serbia, Romania, Spain, France, Switzerland, Germany, Austria, and ex-Yugoslavia, with the cooperation of colleagues of other Universities. The specimens are under a taxonomic revision that is carried out combining morphometric and molecular analyses The initial two phases of inventorying and curating were completed. The third phase, the digitalization of the total European oak specimens collected is still a work in progress.

Plan:

The IS Herbarium is hosted in the Museum of the Natural Science of the University of Molise (Italy). Molise is a little and neglected region in Italy. The Museum is equipped with an Epson scanner A3. In order to meet the goal of complete the oak collection digitization by 2021, the work-plan provided to employ a curator for several months. The work provides five phases:
1. All the specimen will be digitalized for geographical area using the Epson scan
2. All the scan files will be recorded in the Quercus data-base
3. All the records will be geo-referenced
4. The complete data-base will be available online
5. The data-base will be upload in http://musei.unimol.it/musnam/
Free and Open Source Software will be chosen for the database management system and the implementing of GIS.
The digitalisation will increase the value of the herbarium and make its content available in an international level for purposes of both preservation and dissemination.

Timetable:

The final outcome of the project provides the following timetable:
• Digitalization of around 4000 specimens of the European white oaks collection using A3 Epson scanner (600 dpi): 30 days per one person
• Informatization of around 4000 records using Microsoft Access 2016: 20 days per one person
• Geo-referencing of around 4000 records: 40 days per one person
• Data upload and GIS using the open-source QGIS (https://qgis.org/en/site/): 30 days per one person
