Objective:

The objective of this project is to establish a digitization platform at the Anita Garibaldi Herbarium (LAG) from the Centro de Educação Superior da Região Sul of the Universidade do Estado de Santa Catarina, Brazil. Although established this year, this collection already has over 1,000 specimens. As everyone knows, our political scenario is not currently science-friendly, with continuous budget cuts. Funding opportunities are also becoming increasingly scarce. Thus, we see the IAPT SCG as timely opportunity to create conditions for the digitization of herbarium sheets at LAG.

Plan:

The first step will be the purchase of a digital camera to capture high resolution images of the herbarium sheets (for equipment model and budget information please see the Excel form). After purchasing and receiving the camera, we will build an imaging station with a LED lighting system. Then, after initial testing to set the best camera setting for image acquisition, we will begin the process of digitization of the herbarium sheets at LAG. Since we do not have a technician, a scholarship will be offered to the undergraduate students of the institution. The scholarship holder, supervised by the herbarium curator, will be trained to obtain, process and upload the images to the JABOT online platform (please visit the JABOT website: http://www.jbrj.gov.br/jabot/). The maintenance of the images online is guaranteed by the Instituto de Pesquisas Jardim Botânico do Rio de Janeiro.

Timetable:

Based on the date of announcement of the awarded projects, we estimate the following timetable:
- Purchase and receipt of the digital camera: March-June, 2020;
- Assembly of the imaging station and initial tests: July-August, 2020;
- Scholarship selection and training: September, 2020;
- Beginning of the process of image acquisition, processing, and upload to the JABOT platform: October, 2020;
- Estimated deadline for digitization of all herbarium sheets (at that time): July, 2021.
