Objective:

The main objective is to obtain improvements to the infrastructure of the Herbarium RN, enabling secure packaging for the existing collection and the creation of new spaces for the botanical samples being inserted into the collection. These measures will improve care for students and researchers who visit the Herbarium RN daily.

Plan:

The Dunes Park (Parque das Dunas) is located in Natal, state of Rio Grande do Norte. Recognized by UNESCO as an integral part of the Brazilian Atlantic Forest Biosphere Reserve, Parque das Dunas is considered the largest urban park on dunes of Brazil. The Herbarium RN is located in the Parque das Dunas Research Center. This small collection began its work in 1980 to house the first collections of botanical material from this important protected area. By 2020, the herbarium will be 40 years old, but its history has been paralyzed over time for long years. For lack of investments and incentives, this herbarium spent 36 years without opening to the public. An effort started in 2016 aims to grow and make it a reference collection for the state of Rio Grande do Norte and for the country. Since then, the Herbarium RN has grown rapidly and its main collection is plant samples from protected areas of the state. This intense growth is happening due to increased field trips to collect botanical material and the receipt of donations of botanical samples from numerous herbaria in the country. This extra demand for space makes it necessary to purchase new tailored steel cabinets to securely pack the existing collection and give up space to receive new samples. Microscopy upgrades are critical to assisting researchers using the Herbarium RN facility.

Timetable:

The RN Herbarium's opening hours are Monday to Friday, from 08:00 am until 02:00 pm. The acquisition of material will be made in April 2020 and its use would be long term.
