Objective:
The National University of Samoa Herbarium is the only digitised large collection comprising +400 specimen of Indigenous and Endemic plant Species. Although in an a/c environment the storage is not air-tight, and some specs are prone to degradation over time. The collection will also include marine flora. Moreover, the intent of NUS to become the focal point for taxonomists, researchers, and education.
The collection objectives follow the increasing urgency due to environment degradation and CC particularly in relation to Samoan rare and endangered plant species.
Plan:
Initially, through the purchase of new storage cabinets (air-tight) and curatorial items to improve the collection storage and display as needed.
Secondly, restoration of damaged samples, and relabeling (including, in some cases confirmation of identification).
If more funds:
Re-collection and curation of lost/stolen samples.
Mounting of incoming newly collected specimens.
Digitisation of all restored and new specimens.
Timetable:
If grant application successful then:
Purchase cabinet and materials by February 2020
Restoring and relabeling of spoiled specimen by December 2020
If more funds available:
From re-collecting to digitising new specs. by December 2021
Starting new marine collection by December 2022
