Objective:

The genus Thymus L. is one of the most problematic for systematics among plants. There is still no clear set of morphological features that are of diagnostic importance. In Ukraine, the Thymus genus was studied by Klokov M. V. and Desyatova-Shostenko N. O., who described 15 taxa (species and subspecies). At the CWU herbarium currently has about 1,000 herbarium sheets of the Thymus genus. Among them 69 sheets are typical. Therefore, digitization of the Thymus genus will further help researchers better determine the taxonomic position of the species.

Plan:

We invite four people for implementing this project. There are a project manager, curator of herbarium CWU, laboratory assistant and volunteer. 10-14 herbarium sheets will be processed in one working day. We have divided our work into three main steps for greater efficiency, and we will involve personal project participants for each stage:
І. The preparatory stage
We need to purchase the necessary equipment (barcode scanner Netum NT-1228BL, computer Asus X57OUD) and materials for mounting herbarium sheets (mounting paper, folders for herbarium sheets, glue). At this stage we plan to involve a project manager and curator of herbarium.
ІІ. The digitization
Each herbarium sheet will be entered to the PlutoF database. Then we will prepare a barcode and mount herbarium sheets to improve the preservation of the samples. The next step is scanning herbarium sheets and folding them. At this stage we plan to involve a laboratory assistant and volunteer.
ІІІ. The final stage
All specimens will be published in GBIF and typical specimens in the database JSTOR. We will prepare a report on the results of our work at the conference.

Timetable:

The project “Digitization of the Thymus L. (Lamiaceae) genus collection including typical specimens of M.V.Klokov in the herbarium of CWU (Kharkiv, Ukraine)”is designed for 7-8 months. The first preparatory stage will last about 2 months. The second stage is designed for 3-4 months during this stage it is planned to process 10-14 herbarium sheets every working day. The third stage is designed for 2 months.
