Objective:
The Herbarium ABGI has about 20 thousand specimens of vascular plants. The Herbarium is formed from plants, collected mainly in natural populations of Amur Oblast (Province), often from remote areas. Рlant species from different botanical and geographical areas in the vicinity of Amur Oblast (Eastern Siberia, Manchuria, Dauria, and Okhotia ) are present on its territory. Many of these are located at the border of their habitats. The objective of the project is providing a safe and secure environment for each specimen of the Herbarium collection ABGI.
Plan:
Herbarium collection should be stored in metal cabinets to best protect the plant specimens from light, dust and insects, however currently only a part of the Herbarium ABGI is housed in such cabinets. To improve storage conditions of the rest of the collection it is necessary to purchase 9 additional herbarium cabinets. To preserve physical integrity and provide structural support during digitization specimens must be mounted onto herbarium sheets. Only about 30% of Herbarium ABGI collection specimens are mounted and digitized, funding will allow mounting and digitizing 3500 specimens raising that ratio to about 50%. Digital copies of the images of these samples are uploaded to the virtual herbarium of the BGI FEB RAS (VBGI) (http://botsad.ru/herbarium). Digital imaging provides the accessibility of the herbarium collection ABGI for users on global scale.
