Database and Collection Improvement of Lao Plants
Laos
Database, Digitally image, Process backlog
Cost (USD):
2000
FOF
National University of Laos
Objective:
The Herbarium of Faculty of Forestry (FOF), National University of Laos is housed more than 10,000 specimens (including Types) of Lao plants which are being described recently from Laos and cited as literature for the account of Lao plants. This project aims to establish a database of the collections at the FOF herbarium.
Timetable:
The project will be carried out in 12 months from March 2022 to February 2023.
1. Purchasing mounting paper and computer/External hard drives (March 2022)
2. Mounting herbarium specimens (March-June, 2022)
3. Scan specimen images and Database (June-December, 2022)
4. Generate data information and make the database online (January-February, 2023).
Scoring Rubric
Reviewer's name:
Collection Improvement (max. 120 points)
-
Facilitating access to the physical collections by digitization (e.g., data entry, setting up database structure with an outline of the platform to be used, purchasing equipment, and imaging specimens) – up to 30 points.
-
Enhancing physical collections by improving the conservation status of specimens in the herbarium (e.g., better folders, protecting covers, mounting paper, labeling, etc.) – up to 30 points.
-
Curating specimens (e.g., updating families, species identification, identifying types) – up to 20 points.
-
Increasing our understanding of the flora or funga by making new herbarium specimens available, such as processing of backlog or collecting and mounting of new specimens from understudied sites – up to 20 points.
-
Securing collections by distribution of duplicates (or orphan collections) to other regional or international herbaria or shipping endangered collections to another herbarium – up to 20 points.

Methods & Funding (max. 40 points)
-
Match between the proposed budget and methods for the aims described – up to 10 points.
-
Perceived need, the extent to which the project will benefit from IAPT funding: e.g., due to active floristic work or contribution to poorly collected sites, due to threatened conditions of collections, and for the degree of involvement of others (outreach and education). We give more points for herbaria in low- and middle-income countries – up to 20 points.
-
Sharing duplicate specimens with other herbaria – up to 10 points.
This proposal scores:
/40
Broader Impacts (max. 40 points)
-
Degree of regional importance of the collection or the taxonomic importance of the targeted collection – up to 10 points.
-
The project will yield durable benefits (specimens, digitized metadata, databases, websites) – up to 15 points.
-
The project involves outreach/mentoring and broad dissemination – up to 15 points.

Plan:
1. Establishing a database:
There are approximately 10,000 voucher specimens that will be digitalized by using a Scanner (Epson D50000) and Camera which have already been purchased in 2020, together with barcode numbers.
The scanned images and information will be stored and processed in a high-performance Computer and External hard drive that is planned to purchase after this project is approved.
Creating a database in Excel as well as preparing in a format which ready to transfer into the Padme database for the Lao National Checklist (developed by Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh, E).
Mark Newman (E) and Phetlasy Souladeth (FOF) are maintained and developed the Checklist of the vascular plants of Lao PDR. Therefore, the project to improve the database and collections of Lao FOF herbarium is a good start to meet the needs of the country for biodiversity conservation.
2. Collection improvements:
Almost all of the new specimens (about 5,000 sheets) will be mounted with Labels and kept in a storage room to prevent any insects.
Mounting specimens in acid-free herbarium paper (if possible). It might be difficult to purchase due to very few suppliers available in Laos; the order will be helped by colleagues in BKF (Thailand) or KAG (Japan) instead.
The activities in the herbarium including sorting, arrangement, and mounting the specimens will be performed by the two herbarium assistants and volunteer students of the National University of Laos.
