Objective:
The BRBA herbarium contain around 8,000 specimens, currently around 5,342 are informatized and 4,800 digitized. The collection has mainly representatives of the West Bahia state. This region is covered by Neotropical Savannas (Brazilian Cerrado hotspot) with high richness of endemic species, and undergoing extensive loss of natural habitat. In this way, our main objective is to include the 3,000 missing specimens in the JABOT system, turning them available online; and also to perform field work expeditions in the region in order to improve the sampling of this threatened vegetation.
Plan:
The inclusion of almost 3,000 missing specimens in the JABOT system requires basic curatorial and structure improvements to collection, mounting paper, labor costs, and the return of “Photo Traveling Station”. The Photo Traveling Station comprises a basic structure (camera, table, support, and computer) offered by Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden (REFLORA project) in order to digitalize specimens and to include them in JABOT system (http: //brba.jbrj.gov.br). This station is traveling for several small herbaria and stay for a period in each one. The station has been in BRBA herbarium in 2017-2018. Nowadays, we have no resources to carry the station again to the BRBA herbarium (payment of transport) and stay for at least two months here in order to digitize the rest of the collection. Additionally, we could spend part of the grant in the field working in the nearby areas of Cerrado in West of Bahia. Besides the improvement of the our collection, we could also send duplicates of this expedition to other important Brazilian herbaria, as the ALCB (Salvador), CEN (Brasilia), HUEFS (Feira de Santana), and RB (Rio de Janeiro). Therefore, the IAPT Grant could contribute to the maintenance and improvement of BRBA herbarium. The resources will be used to buy mounting paper, to pay labor costs (fellowships to students), to pay transport of the Photo Traveling Station, and with the field expedition to nearby areas.
Timetable:
We propose a timetable of seven months, from April to October of 2020:
April and May / 2020: Primarily, the samples that must be storage into the collection will be mounted and informatized by students. Currently we have include all data into the JABOT system (Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden) and all specimens of BRBA herbarium could be consulted in Virtual herbarium REFLORA (http://reflora.jbrj.gov.br) or in (http://brba.jbrj.gov.br).
June and July / 2020: in this period we could perform one or two short fielwork expeditions to nearby areas (Barreiras and São Desidério municipalities), prioritizing to collect restrict species from Cerrado vegetation. After the fieldwork the specimens will be processed and the duplicates will be separated. These specimens also must be mounted, and storage.
August and September / 2020: We would like to bring the Photo Traveling Station to BRBA herbarium and digitize all mounted and informatized specimens.
October / 2020: In this last month we propose to send the images to REFLORA administration and include them in the JABOT system, turning these available online.
