Objective:
The NHT, established under TPRI Act of 1979 with the mandate of cataloguing the flora of Tanzania, has about 60,000 specimens filed in cabinets while more than 15,000 remain as a backlog. The substantial backlog is collections from our collaborators; the Missouri Botanical Garden through the Tanzania Botanical Training Program (TBTP) between 1998 and 2017, and the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, through Kaj et al. Most of these represent new specimen records to NHT. We wish to incorporate all labeled specimens into cabinets in the next 3 years (2020 to 2022).
Plan:
We plan to mount 6000 specimens per year; we are now mounting 2000 with material received from the Tropical Pesticide Research Institute’s internal sources.
This request is to support mounting of 2000 specimens in July to August 2020 when 5 or more University interns will be on practical training at NHT. NHT staff (John Elia and Neduvoto Mollel) will work with and supervise the team. Each intern will mount about 40 specimens per working day thus at least 2000 will be mounted in 10 days. After mounting, 100 specimens will be laid-out and laid-in (sorted and filed) each day for the next 20 days, thus making 2000 incorporated in cabinets. All specimens have already been prepared for mounting. The requested grant is for purchasing 2000 mounting papers, glue and important stationery for the same. No labor cost is requested here.
