Small Collections Grant

The JOI Herbarium collection has just over 18,000 specimens, most of which are Angiosperms. Currently, about 2,000 samples are digitalized, mainly from the Pteridophytes group. It is intended to extend this number to 10,000, with the preferential inclusion of Angiosperms. Initially, the entire collection will be reviewed. Then the correct taxonomic identification at species, genus or family level will be evaluated. When the material cannot be evaluated by the project's proponent taxonomist, taxonomists working in national or international herbariums will be contacted and images sent by e-mail. The next step is to digitize the samples using existing equipment at the JOI Herbarium. The information will be sent for inclusion in the collection of images already made available by the Brazilian national system, managed by the Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden. Among the expected results, we seek to obtain a more reliable representation of the phytodiversity of the municipality of Joinville (SC), where the Joinvillea herbarium is located and in the neighboring cities. Statistics will be provided such as the number of endangered species and a checklist of all species sampled in the Herbarium, thus facilitating access to images by researchers from distant regions who would otherwise have difficulty accessing the material, as well as knowing the representativeness of the samples contained in the institution facilitating the planning of future research.
