Fergusson College, Pune
Objective:
The herbarium of Fergusson College houses around 3000 specimens collected from Western India. It has important collections from 1885-2009 by colonial botanists like G. M. Woodrow (1846–1911), A. Gammie (1864–1935), H.M. Chibber (1894–1921), and has one of the earliest collections from Bombay presidency by R.K. Bhide (1873–1946) which have been used in the preparation of Cooke's Flora of the Bombay Presidency. The collection is also associated with economic botany by V.D. Vartak. This proposal is an endeavor to sort, database, and digitisation which is an urgent need.
Timetable:
Total specimens expected to be curated and digitised: 3000 nos.
Appointment of research assistant: June 2023
Procurement of stationary, herbarium sheets, folder papers, etc: June 2023
June to August 2023: Sorting and remounting of the specimens.
August to mid-September 2023: barcoding and data entry.
Mid-September to October 2023: Imaging.

Scoring Rubric
Reviewer's name:
Collection Improvement (max. 120 points)
-
Facilitating access to the physical collections by digitization (e.g., data entry, setting up database structure with an outline of the platform to be used, purchasing equipment, and imaging specimens) – up to 30 points.
-
Enhancing physical collections by improving the conservation status of specimens in the herbarium (e.g., better folders, protecting covers, mounting paper, labeling, etc.) – up to 30 points.
-
Curating specimens (e.g., updating families, species identification, identifying types) – up to 20 points.
-
Increasing our understanding of the flora or funga by making new herbarium specimens available, such as processing of backlog or collecting and mounting of new specimens from understudied sites – up to 20 points.
-
Securing collections by distribution of duplicates (or orphan collections) to other regional or international herbaria or shipping endangered collections to another herbarium – up to 20 points.

/120
Methods & Funding (max. 40 points)
-
Match between the proposed budget and methods for the aims described – up to 10 points.
-
Perceived need, the extent to which the project will benefit from IAPT funding: e.g., due to active floristic work or contribution to poorly collected sites, due to threatened conditions of collections, and for the degree of involvement of others (outreach and education). We give more points for herbaria in low- and middle-income countries – up to 20 points.
-
Sharing duplicate specimens with other herbaria – up to 10 points.
This proposal scores:
/40
Broader Impacts (max. 40 points)
-
Degree of regional importance of the collection or the taxonomic importance of the targeted collection – up to 10 points.
-
The project will yield durable benefits (specimens, digitized metadata, databases, websites) – up to 15 points.
-
The project involves outreach/mentoring and broad dissemination – up to 15 points.

Plan:
I joined as a contributory faculty to the department of Fergusson College, Pune in August 2022, where the Fergusson College Pune Herbarium (FCP) is situated. Since then, I have been frequently visiting the herbarium cupboards at FCP herbarium and started sorting the collection with voluntary help from the students. As the herbarium has had an important but deteriorating collection due to ignorance in recent years (except for some rough documentation and publications), it requires six months of devoted work of sorting, barcoding, databasing, and digitisation of the specimens. Out of 3000 specimens, some are in need of remounting. The proposal mainly aimed to sort and arrange the specimens with their families and genera. A dedicated herbarium assistant for six months with support from volunteers will clean, remount, barcode, and image the specimens. The important collections referred to Cooke's Flora of the Bombay Presidency will be marked and corresponded to the BSI, herbarium where it can be linked with their database. Also, the voucher specimens used in the preparation of important local floras, Raigad, Sinhagad, Torna, Katraj, and adjoining by V.D. Vartak will be linked with the publications and the accountability of the same will be maintained separately with FCP. As we are having our own customised imaging and barcoding system, the support of the IAPT-SCG will be mainly utilised for manpower, stationary, and cupboard.
