Species delimitations in Sargassum (Fucales, Sargassaceae) based on phylogenetic analyses of molecular and morphological data, with emphasis on the Australian taxa

Project summary:

This project aims to generate a robust framework for classifying large brown algae, including rare and threatened species. The number of species in the genus Sargassum, particularly in Australia, is uncertain. More than half of the collection at the Queensland Herbarium is unidentified due to lack of algae taxonomy expertise. Results from analyses of DNA sequences and data from novel microscopy work will serve as evidence to identifying species. This study will train a new phycologist and give clarity to decision-making processes on the conservation and management of Sargassum.
