Role of floral trichomes in evolution of Calydorea Herbert. (Iridaceae): investigation through evolutionary studies, reproductive biology and anatomy

Project summary:

The genus Calydorea (Iridaceae) has unresolved taxonomy and includes three monophyletic groups. This project explores whether some species have functional elaiophores, influencing evolution and taxonomy. We will investigate reproductive biology, floral visitors, and trichome function in four species. Finally, conservation status will be assessed using IUCN criteria, as many species may be threatened.

This is a strong application; however, it raises concerns about whether it is permissible for someone else to write the application on behalf of the candidate. Several parts of the proposal are written in the third person, which is unusual for a personal grant application. For example, under the budget section, it states:

"This project primarily involves fieldwork ($4,000) and materials and supplies for experiments on reproductive biology, pollination, and anatomy ($1,000). The internship in France, including airfare and living expenses, is estimated at $6,100. The total cost of the project amounts to $11,100. The remaining expenses will be covered by the student's bench fee and additional funding sources, such as Protax (financed by FAPERGS), Universal (financed by CNPq), to which she is already affiliated, and the Neotropical Grasslands Conservancy Student Grant. The IAPT Grant will be essential for the completion of this project, particularly for conducting fieldwork and experiments in France."

A similar third-person perspective is also observed under the PhD internship section. This raises questions about whether the proposal was written by the candidate herself or by an advisor or another individual.

There is a lack of clear justification for the IAPT research grant. Clarifying how the IAPT grant will directly support the project, beyond the general mention of fieldwork and experiments, would strengthen the application.
