Biogeography, systematics and conservation of Catasetum Rich ex. Kunth (Orchidaceae) in the Atlantic Forest of Brazil
Project summary:
Catasetum (Orchidaceae) is a genus with unusual characteristics among orchids: deciduous leaves and typically diclinous flowers, in which the staminate flowers possess antenna-like projections sensitive to touch. When triggered, these projections forcefully eject the full pollinarium.
The morphology of the antennae has been used in the infrageneric classification of the genus, but previous studies have not recovered well-supported clades to justify this classification. So, further studies are needed to better understand the evolutionary history of the group and the current cirscumscription.
