Investigating a nature-based solution for agricultural runoff in Ireland: Identification of nutrient/trace element accumulator plant species and their microbial interactions

Project summary:

My PhD aims to identify and describe native Irish species of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi from vegetative buffer strips as a myco-phytoremediatory approach to reduce the nutrient concentration of agricultural runoff. Prior research into AMF in Ireland remains scarce due to a lack of expertise. As a result, the taxonomy and systematics of AMF native to Ireland remain unknown. The combination of culturing, morphological and genetic methods required to comprehensively describe AMF can be acquired at the Canadian Collection of AMF, to which this grant will permit me to visit.
