Systematic studies of the genus Begonia L. (Begoniaceae) in Bhutan Himalaya: molecular phylogeny, biogeography, and taxonomic revision.

Project summary:

The rugged mountain terrain of Bhutan, which has a wide range of altitudes, provides suitable habitats for Begonia species to grow and diversify. Despite Grierson's historic account in 1991, the diversity of the genus in Bhutan is still not fully explored, with many species awaiting discovery. Phylogenetic studies have not been attempted in Begonia taxonomy in Bhutan, which is primarily based on physical morphology. Because of the challenging taxonomy due to the large number of species and poor preservation of morphological features in specimens, the classification of species through DNA analy
