Herbario Regional de Guayana

Objective:

This document exposes the need of strengthen the Regional Herbarium of Guayana (GUYN), considering it as a tool for the study and documentation of the regional flora. The Venezuelan Guayana is one of the richest regions of the country, with about 10.300 plant species, of which about 440 are endemic to the BolĂvar state. The specific objectives are:
1) To get the appropriate functioning of the equipment used for the conservation of the collection.

Collection Improvement (max. 120 points)

  • Facilitating access to the physical collections by digitization (e.g., data entry, setting up database structure with an outline of the platform to be used, purchasing equipment, and imaging specimens) – up to 30 points.

  • Enhancing physical collections by improving the conservation status of specimens in the herbarium (e.g., better folders, protecting covers, mounting paper, labeling, etc.) – up to 30 points.

  • Curating specimens (e.g., updating families, species identification, identifying types) – up to 20 points.

  • Increasing our understanding of the flora or funga by making new herbarium specimens available, such as processing of backlog or collecting and mounting of new specimens from understudied sites – up to 20 points.

  • Securing collections by distribution of duplicates (or orphan collections) to other regional or international herbaria or shipping endangered collections to another herbarium – up to 20 points.

Methods & Funding (max. 40 points)

  • Match between the proposed budget and methods for the aims described – up to 10 points.

  • Perceived need, the extent to which the project will benefit from IAPT funding: e.g., due to active floristic work or contribution to poorly collected sites, due to threatened conditions of collections, and for the degree of involvement of others (outreach and education). We give more points for herbaria in low- and middle-income countries – up to 20 points.

  • Sharing duplicate specimens with other herbaria – up to 10 points.

Broader Impacts (max. 40 points)

  • Degree of regional importance of the collection or the taxonomic importance of the targeted collection – up to 10 points.

  • The project will yield durable benefits (specimens, digitized metadata, databases, websites) – up to 15 points.

  • The project involves outreach/mentoring and broad dissemination – up to 15 points.

Plan:

Because of the political, social and economic situation of the country the government has cut almost totally the budget for research, currently they are very low. Our herbarium does not escape of this situation and this has caused the deterioration of the physical infrastructure, equipment and the short supply of the necessary materials for the maintenance and keeping of the collection, which puts in danger the whole plant collection because of the attack of insects and fungi motivated for the conditioning air equipment damage and the not possibility of make a fumigation of the whole installations. By the other hand, the computer where the database is located, has been damaged for the electrical fluid instability and the same happens for the oven and fridge. So, it is necessary to start the activities for the recuperation of the collection by means of a hand cleaning of the folders and cupboards where the specimens are placed, after this to put the folders containing the specimens in a plastic bag, tie it up and take them to the fridge for quarantine. Once the quarantine is finished to proceed with the herbarium fumigation. At the same time, it is necessary to work for recover the information of the database in the damaged computer, update the information and create a backup in an external hard disk
