Uzhhorod National University
Objective:
Enter into the computer database information from herbarium labels of all samples of vascular plants of the collection of scientific herbarium UU; update the nomenclature of labels, make a list of modern names of taxa available in the scientific herbarium of UU.
Timetable:
Execution of the specified tasks requires 8-9 months of work (in time out of a performance of the basic official duties). Estimated time - 5-6 hours per week. Both types of work - entering information into the database and updating the nomenclature - will be performed in parallel.
Scoring Rubric
Reviewer's name:
Collection Improvement (max. 120 points)
-
Facilitating access to the physical collections by digitization (e.g., data entry, setting up database structure with an outline of the platform to be used, purchasing equipment, and imaging specimens) – up to 30 points.
-
Enhancing physical collections by improving the conservation status of specimens in the herbarium (e.g., better folders, protecting covers, mounting paper, labeling, etc.) – up to 30 points.
-
Curating specimens (e.g., updating families, species identification, identifying types) – up to 20 points.
-
Increasing our understanding of the flora or funga by making new herbarium specimens available, such as processing of backlog or collecting and mounting of new specimens from understudied sites – up to 20 points.
-
Securing collections by distribution of duplicates (or orphan collections) to other regional or international herbaria or shipping endangered collections to another herbarium – up to 20 points.

Methods & Funding (max. 40 points)
-
Match between the proposed budget and methods for the aims described – up to 10 points.
-
Perceived need, the extent to which the project will benefit from IAPT funding: e.g., due to active floristic work or contribution to poorly collected sites, due to threatened conditions of collections, and for the degree of involvement of others (outreach and education). We give more points for herbaria in low- and middle-income countries – up to 20 points.
-
Sharing duplicate specimens with other herbaria – up to 10 points.
This proposal scores:
/40
Broader Impacts (max. 40 points)
-
Degree of regional importance of the collection or the taxonomic importance of the targeted collection – up to 10 points.
-
The project will yield durable benefits (specimens, digitized metadata, databases, websites) – up to 15 points.
-
The project involves outreach/mentoring and broad dissemination – up to 15 points.

Plan:
Herbarium UU was established in 1947. Its maximum volume at the beginning of the 1990s was more than 250 thousand specimens. But since the late 1990s, the herbarium has long been without proper care, several times moved to different rooms for temporary storage. As a result, much of the herbarium specimens were fatally damaged and completely lost. The volume of the collection was catastrophically reduced and in 2011 it was estimated at only 107 thousand samples. There was no objectively detailed information about the samples of the saved collection. Since 2012, the first attempts have been made to create a computer database containing information from the herbarium labels of samples of the scientific herbarium UU. The work is voluntary, there is no permanent employee in the herbarium. We currently use a proven procedure for entering information from the herbarium label into the database. A mobile laptop and an external hard drive will significantly increase the efficiency and reliability of data storage. After processing the primary data, it will be possible to provide open Internet access to the key parameters of the herbarium collection.
One of the problems of organizing the database of the herbarium collection is that the names of taxa used in the labels are not unified, they often differ from modern ones. We have already started work on updating the nomenclature of taxa from the collection of UU. Several modern online nomenclature projects are used for this purpose.
