Objective:
Most of Herbarium SORO's 7,000 exsiccatae come from the Cerrado and Atlantic Forest. SORO aims to increase knowledge of flora in the Sorocaba region and train human resources in Plant Biodiversity. The herbarium has taxonomists specialized in Gesneriaceae and Myrtaceae, who work at the institution. The collection is available for consultation at splink.org.br, but images of the specimens have not yet been produced. Thus, the objectives of this proposal are to digitize and make available images from the SORO collection on the REFLORA platform.
Timetable:
The proposal will be developed predominantly during the year 2021.
February: Separation of damaged specimens, with loose and contaminated parts
March: Preparation of barcode labels
March to October: Preparation of photographs of the specimens
October/2021 - January/2022: loading the files to the Herbário Virtual Reflora platform.

Images of SORO specimens have not been produced so far, due to the difficulties generated by the lack of equipment and personnel for this purpose. It is noteworthy that the availability of data from the herbarium collections on the internet has facilitated and streamlined taxonomic and floristic researches and reduced the cost and damage caused by handling and transporting herbaria specimens.
This proposal aims to enable the preparation of images of the exsiccates from the collection of the SORO herbarium, for online availability. For this, resources are requested for labor costs (scholarship), purchase of a professional photo camera, a tripod and a laptop that will be used exclusively for the preparation and availability of images.
The preparatory stage for digitization will include separation of specimens with possible damage, loose and contaminated parts to solve these problems. This stage and the next ones will follow the collection organization sequence. For each specimen, a barcode will be generated, printed and pasted for later inclusion in the database. Each specimen will be positioned in the correct place to be photographed, using the settings recommended in REFLORA for the scans. Concomitant to digitization, the materials will be inserted in an associated database in the standard Darwin Core Archive (DWC-A) for later availability in the Virtual Herbarium Reflora.
