Objective:

1. To Capture high quality images of available wild flowering plants, and ferns and their georeferencing data/geolocation
2. Increase collections of voucher specimens of available wild flowing plants (threatened) and deposit to Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Bauchi Herbarium
3. Collect some available threatened live flowering plants for Herbs and seeds for trees and shrubs, plant them for conservation in Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University botanical garden.
4. Publish information of available wild flowering plants, and ferns online for free

Timetable:

January- April 2023 (dry and Harmattan seasons) the activities will be capturing of live photographs, georeferencing and collections of fruits/seeds of Deciduous and evergreen wild flowering plants. Survey of some tributaries and Remote caves, cervices, rock pools and Rocky outcrops in mountains in Some parts of Sudan and Guinea Savanna. Areas and localities with insecurity will be avoided based on local reports
June – October 2023 (rainy season) my activities will continues with photographs, georeferencing, collections of wild flowering Plants (threatened), ferns and fungi in Nigerian savanna. Mountains/hills tributaries and grassland with be given priority this will cover some parts of Sudan, Sahel and Guinea savanna. Areas and localities with insecurity will be avoided based on local reports.
November – December (2023) is for finishing write-up/project and upload online for publications which will be free

  • Facilitating access to the physical collections by digitization (e.g., data entry, setting up database structure with an outline of the platform to be used, purchasing equipment, and imaging specimens) – up to 30 points.

  • Enhancing physical collections by improving the conservation status of specimens in the herbarium (e.g., better folders, protecting covers, mounting paper, labeling, etc.) – up to 30 points.

  • Curating specimens (e.g., updating families, species identification, identifying types) – up to 20 points.

  • Increasing our understanding of the flora or funga by making new herbarium specimens available, such as processing of backlog or collecting and mounting of new specimens from understudied sites – up to 20 points.

  • Securing collections by distribution of duplicates (or orphan collections) to other regional or international herbaria or shipping endangered collections to another herbarium – up to 20 points.

  • Match between the proposed budget and methods for the aims described – up to 10 points.

For each wild flowering plant and fern, live photographs will be capture with includes parts whole flowering plants, flowers and fruits. Features useful for identification will be capture (case study:- transparent stem is feature of taxon from family Urticaceae was used to identify Taxon (Pilea angolensis) which the live photographs is not available online but was uploaded by INaturalist observer with user name “umarmusa”). from Nigeria.
Voucher specimens of Threatened wild flowering plants will be prepared and send to Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Herbarium for storage. Also some regional Herbaria will be contacted if they need any of the collected specimens. If any specimens is request from international herbaria and botanical gardens specimens will be supply.
Some threatened wild flowering plants will be collected for plantation in Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Botanical Garden. Seeds for trees, Shrubs and lives plant for herb plantation.
At the end of project/ Write-up will be upload online for publication free.
