Objective:

The project objectives are to:
Produce a comprehensive inventory of crop wild relatives found in Zimbabwe.
Digitize the crop wild relatives collection of the Southern Rhodesian Government Herbarium.
Map and model the distribution of A. senegalensis in Zimbabwe.
Identify major threats to A. senegalensis and figure out how best to address the threats.

Timetable:

Compilation of comprehensive inventory of the CWR is running concurrently from January to April of this year with the digitization process to complete in June. Data transcription will run from June to September of this year. Mapping and modelling of A.senegalensis will be in October this year to January 2025. A data validation visit to Germany will be this coming August with the Max Planck Institute of Biology Tübingen.Threat identification will be carried out from January 2025 to April 2025. A plant conservation training will be attended in January of 2025 in Nopad. Literature review of A.senegalensis value discovery will be conducted from March 2025 to May 2025. A thesis will be prepared from March 2025 to June 2025.

  • Enhancing physical collections by improving the conservation status of specimens in the herbarium (e.g., better folders, protecting covers, mounting paper, labeling, etc.) – up to 30 points.

  • Curating specimens (e.g., updating families, species identification, identifying types) – up to 20 points.

  • Increasing our understanding of the flora or funga by making new herbarium specimens available, such as processing of backlog or collecting and mounting of new specimens from understudied sites – up to 20 points.

  • Securing collections by distribution of duplicates (or orphan collections) to other regional or international herbaria or shipping endangered collections to another herbarium – up to 20 points.

The project aims to produce a comprehensive inventory of crop wild relatives (CWRs) in Zimbabwe. The existing SRGH CWR species list will be updated and linked to current cultivated crops. Occurrence data on CWRs will be collated from various sources, including herbarium specimens and databases. The digitization of the CWR collection will also be done, with geographic coordinates included for each specimen. The distribution of A. senegalensis in Zimbabwe will be mapped and modeled, with major threats identified through threat analysis. Strategies for the protection and conservation of A. senegalensis will also be recommended, including raising awareness among the community and involving conservation agencies and organizations in developing conservation strategies.
