Objective:
Chile has a high diversity and endemism, but still little is known about the macrofungi. Our fungarium has collections from diverse ecosystems of the country, but the information collected has yet to be systematized. The aim is to establish an updated database of the specimens of macrofungi housed in the MICOCL Fungarium, in order to digitize them for outreach purposes.
Specific aims:
Determine by classical taxonomy the identity of pending specimens.
Organize and update the fungal specimen database of the fungarium.
Digitize specimens of fungarium for outreach purposes.
Timetable:
Objective 1: Determine by classical taxonomy the identity of pending specimens.
- Month 1 - Month 4: Taxonomic determination of previously collected specimens.
Objective 2: Organize and update the fungal specimen database of the fungarium.
- Month 1 - Month 4: As specimens are taxonomically determined, they will be stored in labeled paper bags and subsequently organized in plastic boxes according to their taxonomic rank.
- Month 5 - Month 8: Update the fungarium database in Excel.
Objective 3: Digitize the specimens of macrofungi housed in the fungarium for outreach purposes.
- Month 9 - Month 11: Digitization of specimens by means of ex situ photographs, which will be stored together with the database on an external hard disk.
- Month 12: Publication of the checklist of the specimens stored in the MICOCL Fungarium in scientific journals and GBIF online platform.
Scoring Rubric
Reviewer's name:
Collection Improvement (max. 120 points)
-
Facilitating access to the physical collections by digitization (e.g., data entry, setting up database structure with an outline of the platform to be used, purchasing equipment, and imaging specimens) – up to 30 points.
-
Enhancing physical collections by improving the conservation status of specimens in the herbarium (e.g., better folders, protecting covers, mounting paper, labeling, etc.) – up to 30 points.
-
Curating specimens (e.g., updating families, species identification, identifying types) – up to 20 points.
-
Increasing our understanding of the flora or funga by making new herbarium specimens available, such as processing of backlog or collecting and mounting of new specimens from understudied sites – up to 20 points.
-
Securing collections by distribution of duplicates (or orphan collections) to other regional or international herbaria or shipping endangered collections to another herbarium – up to 20 points.

/120
Methods & Funding (max. 40 points)
-
Match between the proposed budget and methods for the aims described – up to 10 points.
-
Perceived need, the extent to which the project will benefit from IAPT funding: e.g., due to active floristic work or contribution to poorly collected sites, due to threatened conditions of collections, and for the degree of involvement of others (outreach and education). We give more points for herbaria in low- and middle-income countries – up to 20 points.
-
Sharing duplicate specimens with other herbaria – up to 10 points.
This proposal scores:
/40
Broader Impacts (max. 40 points)
-
Degree of regional importance of the collection or the taxonomic importance of the targeted collection – up to 10 points.
-
The project will yield durable benefits (specimens, digitized metadata, databases, websites) – up to 15 points.
-
The project involves outreach/mentoring and broad dissemination – up to 15 points.

Plan:
1. Determine by classical taxonomy the identity of the pending specimens:
We will proceed to taxonomically determine the specimens that are still pending, using a stereoscopic magnifying glass and through optical microscopy. For this, dichotomous keys and relevant literature will be used.
2. Organization and updating of the Fungarium:
Each specimen collected will be stored in a paper envelope or cardboard box with a label containing relevant identifying information. These will be organized in plastic boxes according to their taxonomic category. Silica gel, antifungals and insecticides will be added to avoid contamination of the samples.
Subsequently, the database contained in Excel of the stored samples will be updated, using DARWIN CORE coding, to later publish the data on the GBIF platform.
3. Digitization of the Fungarium:
Each specimen already has an in situ photograph in fresh state, so photographs will be taken of each of the dehydrated and stored specimens along with the code assigned for classification within the fungarium. Once the specimens are digitized, the diversity of specimens housed in the MICOCL Fungarium Collection will be made known through digital media.
