Objective:
The main objective of the project is to improve the management of the Herbarium from São Paulo State Federal University (HUFSP) which is an important repository of voucher material for researches on systematics, ecology, conservation biodiversity, ethnobotany, paleobiology and phytochemistry, and also an important support for classes and extension projects. Another objective is to improve the collection with fieldwork expeditions to document some important knowledge gaps in Central Brazil in order to contribute to the Flora of Brazil 2020 project (http://floradobrasil.jbrj.gov.br/).
Timetable:
The first step (in March 2020) will be buying all material for mounting (papers) and storing (herbarium cabinets) herbarium specimens. As soon as we get all material needed we will start mounting and registering the 800 specimens we already have (this will probably start at the end of March or beginning of April and will continue until August 2020). After mounting and registering, the specimens will be properly stored in herbarium cabinets.
Fieldwork expeditions will be done in September 2020. We choose this month because we took into account the phenology of the species we are interested in collect. After finishing the fieldwork, we will process all specimens, mounting, registering and storing them in herbarium cabinets.

Brazil is facing a huge contingency for research, being all public universities the most affected institutions. Campus Diadema is one of the most underprivileged units of UNIFESP, located at Metropolitan Region of São Paulo, is the only campus having a Biological Sciences undergraduate course. So, the improvement of this Herbarium would be of great importance for the Institution and for the community.
Even though we have a small herbarium with only about 600 registered exsiccate, we still have many specimens from different research projects at Unifesp (about 800) in need of mounting and to be included into the collection. Therefore, all material requested in this project (1000 sheets of Opaline 240 grams A3 format, high brightness; 1000 sheets of Kraft paper, for species cover) will be used for mounting specimens and store them in the herbarium cabinets. For mounting, registering and storing specimens we have a team of undergraduate and graduate students, already trained for this activity.
In order to achieve the goals of this project, we intend to realize one fieldwork expedition in Central Brazil (in areas of transition between Amazon and ‘Cerrado’ Domains). Since we will have few resources, we must optimize the amount spent on the fieldwork expedition. Thus, only the two main researchers from HUFSP (Dr. Maria Beatriz Rossi Caruzo and Dr. Carla Poleselli Bruniera) will participate on the expedition, which is expected to occur in September 2020.
