Objective:
The Dourados Herbarium (DDMS) has a collection of ca. 6500 specimens from southwestern Brazil, including the highly threatened Pantanal wetland that had been more recently massively devastated by fire. Thus, the main objective of the Herbarium of preserving specimens and enhance the accessibility of the collection to the community became demanding. The grant will be invested in the following improvements:
1) Database all specimens and provide online
2) Improve collection conservation and management
3) Image herbarium specimens and provide online
4) Support an educational initiative
Timetable:
1) We estimate 1 month for Jabot’s implementation and training; 4 months to relocate the digitized database to Jabot and provide the records in an online platform (~ 80 records/working day); 2 months to digitize the ca. 800 specimens of the backlog. These steps will be in charge of the only permanent staff available. Others needs will be supported by the interns to maintain the services provided by the Herbarium.
2) This step will initiate after step 1 is accomplished. The databased collection will allow to attach a barcode to each specimen and perform conservation procedures (~60 specimens/working day). We estimate 6 months to fully accomplish it.
3) This step will simultaneously follow step 2. The specimens will be photographed and linked to the online record. We estimate a capacity to perform ~100 specimens/working day.
4) To incorporate plants to the exhibition we estimate 2 months working in an educational approach using as reference remarkable botanical exhibitions housed in herbaria such as RB and SPF; 2 months to design the display, to set apart the botanical material and obtain supporting material (e.g. frames, banners, boxes).

The Herbarium DDMS holds specimens from the Pantanal wetland, Atlantic forest and Cerrado. The University provides the basic material for specimens processing and shipping. The collection is stored in a 32m² room climatized containing cabinets and account with one permanent staff and few interns. The sheets are currently digitized using Excel. If granted the money will be invested in:
1) Digitize and relocate the data to the free software Jabot v.3 which allows providing the records through an online platform (http://jabot.jbrj.gov.br/v3/consulta.php).
2) Each databased specimen will receive a barcode to be attached in the sheet. It will be performed simultaneously to the improvement of conservation of exsiccates through replacement of the cardboard (if necessary), accommodate fragments in a paper bag, and prevent damage by fungi and bugs.
3) Digitalize the specimens using an imaging station. The barcode is demanding to accelerate the imaging process and associate the record to the image unequivocally.
4) The city of Dourados (220,000 ctz.) lacks any kind of natural history museum except by a modest zoological exhibition in the University. It provides an educational environment, especially to basic and high schools. We aim to incorporate plants to the exhibition, enhance the visibility of the herbarium and highlight the importance of collections through the display of remarkable regional plants in exsiccates, dried fruits and seeds, and banners of plant morphology/evolution.
