Objective:
General: Enhance the UIS Herbarium by expanding its collection and initiating the digitization of its fern, lycophyte, and type specimens.
Specific Objectives
1. Mount and prepare 300 specimens, prioritizing ferns, lycophytes, and types for long-term preservation in the herbarium collection.
2. Digitalize the fern and lycophyte specimens, including the main collection and type specimens, to ensure accessibility and preservation.
3. Integrate the digitized data into the Symbiota portal to facilitate global access and research.

Scoring Rubric
Reviewer's name:
Collection Improvement (max. 120 points)
-
Facilitating access to the physical collections by digitization (e.g., data entry, setting up database structure with an outline of the platform to be used, purchasing equipment, and imaging specimens) – up to 30 points.
-
Enhancing physical collections by improving the conservation status of specimens in the herbarium (e.g., better folders, protecting covers, mounting paper, labeling, etc.) – up to 30 points.
-
Curating specimens (e.g., updating families, species identification, identifying types) – up to 20 points.
-
Increasing our understanding of the flora or funga by making new herbarium specimens available, such as processing of backlog or collecting and mounting of new specimens from understudied sites – up to 20 points.
-
Securing collections by distribution of duplicates (or orphan collections) to other regional or international herbaria or shipping endangered collections to another herbarium – up to 20 points.

Methods & Funding (max. 40 points)
-
Match between the proposed budget and methods for the aims described – up to 10 points.
-
Perceived need, the extent to which the project will benefit from IAPT funding: e.g., due to active floristic work or contribution to poorly collected sites, due to threatened conditions of collections, and for the degree of involvement of others (outreach and education). We give more points for herbaria in low- and middle-income countries – up to 20 points.
-
Sharing duplicate specimens with other herbaria – up to 10 points.
This proposal scores:
/40
Broader Impacts (max. 40 points)
-
Degree of regional importance of the collection or the taxonomic importance of the targeted collection – up to 10 points.
-
The project will yield durable benefits (specimens, digitized metadata, databases, websites) – up to 15 points.
-
The project involves outreach/mentoring and broad dissemination – up to 15 points.

Plan:
Santander department represents a hotspot in Colombia, a megadiverse country. However, this biodiversity is highly threatened, although poorly known, mainly because the population lack of conscience regarding these biological resources and the lack of local government support. To exemplify this, a conservation plan for species as threatened and endemic Cavanillesia chicamochae Fern. Alonso or Zamia encephalartoides D.W. Stev., has not yet been stablished; neither complete samples have been included in herbarium collection.
The Herbarium UIS, founded in 1978, possess around 20.000 specimens of 3500 species, and represents the most complete plant collection from Santander Department. Despite its importance, the Herbarium is still not a source of consultation for the Santander population. Mainly because the herbarium lacks a virtual platform to visualize their collections.
To promote the diffusion and use of this important collection, especially
specimens recently collected in the Yariguies Natural Park and the páramos of Santurban and Almorzadero, we have left 1000 specimens that are stocked, waiting to be included in the collection. Those represent mainly ferns, lycophytes and types from different groups. To advance in this process we propose a framework that consists of 3 steps:
1. Specimen Preparation: With the support of students hired by this project we are going to select the specimens on the basis of: a. Presence of reproductive organs, the quality of its data, its
