Objective:
The Dourados Herbarium (DDMS) comprises a collection of ca. 6500 specimens from central-western Brazil, including regional collections of the Atlantic Forest and the highly threatened Pantanal wetland that had been recently massively devastated by fire. Thus, the main objective of preserving specimens and enhance the accessibility of the collection to the community became demanding. The grant will be invested in the following improvements:
1) Database all specimens using JABOT and provide online;
2) Increase the collection by processing all backlog with ca. 2500 specimens.
Timetable:
1) We estimate 1 month for training three interns; 6 months to digitize the collection using JABOT and provide the records online. We expect to digitize 240 specimens/week;
2) Conservation practises (e.g. removing exceeding paper, changing cover paper or sheet) will take place when manipulating specimens during digitizing. It will be performed simultaneously with digitizing process.
3) We estimate 2 months for mounting and incorporate the backlog in the collection.
Considering that any loss or damage to specimens is a tragic event because of the unique nature of the collections, we are convinced that the Herbarium DDMS and its associated collection will be greatly benefited if granted.

The Herbarium DDMS holds vascular and avascular specimens, including fungi, from the Pantanal wetland, Atlantic Forest and Cerrado. The University provides the basic material for specimens processing and shipping. More recently, the curatorship of the Herbarium DDMS has changed with plans to improve the collection conditions. The main collection is stored in a 32 m² climatized room containing cabinets. However, backlog of ca. 2500 specimens is stored in cabinets allocated in the corridor because they are not processed, and we do not have available space to accommodate the backlog in the climatized collection room. The backlog is additionally accommodated in plastic bags to mitigate bug eating. Therefore, we are running against time to avoid specimens’ deterioration. We are working with two priorities: 1) digitize the current collection and make it available online; 2) process the backlog, digitize and incorporate in the collection. Currently, we are not able to perform the steps concomitantly. However, we expect to perform them simultaneously if the money is granted by increase the number of students working on it. The grant will be converted in three undergrad scholarships with 9 months duration each in order to:
1) Digitize the collection using the free access software for database management JABOT v.3 and publish it in an online platform (http://jabot.jbrj.gov.br/v3/consulta.php);
2) Improve exsiccates conservation;
3) Mounting and database backlog.
