Museu Paraense Emílio Goeldi

Objective:

Digitize and curate 1300 specimens of rust fungi from Caxiuanã National Forest.
Integrate the digitized data into the Specify database platform to facilitate access and research.
Replacing old exsiccatae with quality mounting materials and standardized labels.
Process and mount a backlog of 300 specimens.
Share available duplicates with the herbarium INPA.
Collecting material in unstudied areas of this conservation unit, such as the concession area for logging activity.
Train undergraduate students in herbarium management.
Publish a checklist of rust fungi from Caxiuanã Forest.

Timetable:

Months 1-4: Survey of rust fungi specimens; initiation of curatorial maintenance of the fungi collection and taxonomic curation; updating of specimen records; initiation of digitization; initiation of the reorganization of the collection of rust fungi from Caxiuanã; recruitment and training of undergraduate students.
Months 5-8: Continuation of collection maintenance, taxonomic curation, and digitization; initiation of backlog processing; field collection of rust fungi; continuation of collection reorganization; training of undergraduate students.
Months 9-12: Completion of collection maintenance and taxonomic curation; completion of specimen digitization; continuation and finalization of backlog processing; field collection and identification of specimens; continuation of collection reorganization; training of undergraduate students.
Months 13-18: Completion of taxonomic updates; incorporation of newly collected and processed specimens; completion of the reorganization and cataloging of the collection of rust fungi from Caxiuanã; training of undergraduate students; submission of the final report; submission of a manuscript.

Scoring Rubric

Reviewer's name:

Collection Improvement (max. 120 points)

  • Facilitating access to the physical collections by digitization (e.g., data entry, setting up database structure with an outline of the platform to be used, purchasing equipment, and imaging specimens) – up to 30 points.

  • Enhancing physical collections by improving the conservation status of specimens in the herbarium (e.g., better folders, protecting covers, mounting paper, labeling, etc.) – up to 30 points.

  • Curating specimens (e.g., updating families, species identification, identifying types) – up to 20 points.

  • Increasing our understanding of the flora or funga by making new herbarium specimens available, such as processing of backlog or collecting and mounting of new specimens from understudied sites – up to 20 points.

  • Securing collections by distribution of duplicates (or orphan collections) to other regional or international herbaria or shipping endangered collections to another herbarium – up to 20 points.

This proposal scores:

/120

Methods & Funding (max. 40 points)

  • Match between the proposed budget and methods for the aims described – up to 10 points.

  • Perceived need, the extent to which the project will benefit from IAPT funding: e.g., due to active floristic work or contribution to poorly collected sites, due to threatened conditions of collections, and for the degree of involvement of others (outreach and education). We give more points for herbaria in low- and middle-income countries – up to 20 points.

  • Sharing duplicate specimens with other herbaria – up to 10 points.

This proposal scores:

/40

Broader Impacts (max. 40 points)

  • Degree of regional importance of the collection or the taxonomic importance of the targeted collection – up to 10 points.

  • The project will yield durable benefits (specimens, digitized metadata, databases, websites) – up to 15 points.

  • The project involves outreach/mentoring and broad dissemination – up to 15 points.

Plan:

A survey of all rust fungi specimens from the João Murça Pires Herbarium (MG) collected in Caxiuanã will be conducted to identify holotypes and specimens suitable for analysis. Dried specimens showing any type of damage will undergo curatorial maintenance, including replacement of cardboard sheets and printing of new labels with updated taxonomic information and other associated metadata. Specimen data will be cross-checked against field notebooks and published records of the corresponding species. Missing information will be incorporated into the Specify database. Subsequently, the specimens will be digitized to produce high-resolution images for inclusion into Specify. Backlog samples will be analyzed following standard procedures for taxonomic studies of Pucciniales; once identified, specimens will be prepared, curated, and digitized. Two field expeditions will be conducted to collect rust fungi in previously unsurveyed areas within the Caxiuanã National Forest. Newly collected specimens will be identified, curated, digitized, and incorporated into the herbarium. Duplicate specimens will be shared with the INPA herbarium to strengthen institutional collaboration. The project will also provide training opportunities for undergraduate students in herbarium curation and digitization.
