Objective:

The Mongoyós Herbarium (HVC) is a small collection (8,000 specimens), in the from northeast Brazil (Bahia). The implementation of the herbarium at IMS/CAT has contributed significantly to the knowledge of the flora of the southwestern region of Bahia and has helped in quality instruction for undergraduate students to work with the biological collections. The objective this project is consolidate the HVC as a reference collection. The grant will be invested to digitalization of specimens, improve specimen storage and processing conditions, distribution of duplicates to other herbaria.

Timetable:

According to the objectives, the activities were described below indicating the months and/or weeks in which these activities will take place.

1. Activity: Purchase of equipment and materials for the Herbarium
Months: February and March.
2. Activity: Increase the herbarium by mounting, including and databasing 1000 backlog specimens
Months: February, March, April and May (250 specimens per month)
3. Activity: Distribution of ca. 1000 duplicates to other herbaria
Months: March, April, May, June, July, August (150-200 samples per month)
4. Activity: Image capture training
Month: June (one week).
5. Activity: Capture high resolution images.
Months: June, July, August, September, October, November and December (ca. 600 images per month, 150 per week), total 4000 specimens.
6. Continue training student in herbarium curation and management.
Months: Throughout the months.

Plan:

The operation of the herbarium is basically guaranteed with the support of undergraduate students, who are trainees, some IMS faculty members who are also users of the Herbarium, and a technician who helps in some activities. Collection and herborization of botanical material are carried out, registration in the database, assembly of the exsiccates and organization in the cabinetries. Currently the main partner is the INCT - Virtual Herbarium of Flora and Fungi, which has funded technical support grants since 2019. Currently, there are no other sources of funds to purchase material such as cabinetries, cardboards, or computers.

So, to achieve the goals this project, I will continue the activities that I have been developing together with my team and some contributors.
Students will be responsible for capturing high resolution images of ca. 4000 specimens and share them online at http://jabot.jbrj.gov.br/ and https://specieslink.net/.
The collection increase will be done by assembling, including, and building on 1000 accumulated specimens.
With the cabinetry requested, it will be possible to equip the collection rooms to safely accommodate the samples received and thus improve the storage and processing conditions of specimens.
