Revision, taxonomic update, biodiversity and digitalization of Angiosperms listed in Joinvillea Herbarium (JOI), Joinville, Santa Catarina, Brazil.
Brazil
Database, Digitally image
Cost (USD):
2000
JOI
Herbário Joinvillea
Objective:
- Analyze and update the correct taxonomic classification at species, genus, and family level.
- Plot statistical data on threatened species and biodiversity recorded in the municipality of Joinville and the following neighboring municipalities: São Francisco do Sul, Itapoá, Garuva, Guaramirim, Campo Alegre and São Bento do Sul.
- Perform the scanning process of the analyzed material.
Timetable:
Every month the same activities will be performed:
March: Review and digitize samples from botanical families with initials A through E.
April: Review and digitize samples from botanical families with initials F through J.
May: Review and digitize samples from botanical families with initials K through N.
June: Review and digitize samples from botanical families with initials O to S.
July: Review and digitize samples from botanical families with initials T through Z.
Scoring Rubric
Reviewer's name:
Collection Improvement (max. 120 points)
-
Facilitating access to the physical collections by digitization (e.g., data entry, setting up database structure with an outline of the platform to be used, purchasing equipment, and imaging specimens) – up to 30 points.
-
Enhancing physical collections by improving the conservation status of specimens in the herbarium (e.g., better folders, protecting covers, mounting paper, labeling, etc.) – up to 30 points.
-
Curating specimens (e.g., updating families, species identification, identifying types) – up to 20 points.
-
Increasing our understanding of the flora or funga by making new herbarium specimens available, such as processing of backlog or collecting and mounting of new specimens from understudied sites – up to 20 points.
-
Securing collections by distribution of duplicates (or orphan collections) to other regional or international herbaria or shipping endangered collections to another herbarium – up to 20 points.
This proposal scores:
/120
Methods & Funding (max. 40 points)
-
Match between the proposed budget and methods for the aims described – up to 10 points.
-
Perceived need, the extent to which the project will benefit from IAPT funding: e.g., due to active floristic work or contribution to poorly collected sites, due to threatened conditions of collections, and for the degree of involvement of others (outreach and education). We give more points for herbaria in low- and middle-income countries – up to 20 points.
-
Sharing duplicate specimens with other herbaria – up to 10 points.
This proposal scores:
/40
Broader Impacts (max. 40 points)
-
Degree of regional importance of the collection or the taxonomic importance of the targeted collection – up to 10 points.
-
The project will yield durable benefits (specimens, digitized metadata, databases, websites) – up to 15 points.
-
The project involves outreach/mentoring and broad dissemination – up to 15 points.

Plan:
The JOI Herbarium collection has just over 18,000 specimens, most of which are Angiosperms. Currently, about 2,000 samples are digitalized, mainly from the Pteridophytes group. It is intended to extend this number to 10,000, with the preferential inclusion of Angiosperms. Initially, the entire collection will be reviewed. Then the correct taxonomic identification at species, genus or family level will be evaluated. When the material cannot be evaluated by the project's proponent taxonomist, taxonomists working in national or international herbariums will be contacted and images sent by e-mail. The next step is to digitize the samples using existing equipment at the JOI Herbarium. The information will be sent for inclusion in the collection of images already made available by the Brazilian national system, managed by the Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden. Among the expected results, we seek to obtain a more reliable representation of the phytodiversity of the municipality of Joinville (SC), where the Joinvillea herbarium is located and in the neighboring cities. Statistics will be provided such as the number of endangered species and a checklist of all species sampled in the Herbarium, thus facilitating access to images by researchers from distant regions who would otherwise have difficulty accessing the material, as well as knowing the representativeness of the samples contained in the institution facilitating the planning of future research.
