Objective:
The aim of this project is to process the 523 specimens of Calendula L: (Asteraceae) collected by the applicant, and his students, under the scope of their recently published taxonomical revisions of Calendula. This will include changing from newspaper sheets to mounting card, including labels and mounting with appropriate gummed archival linen tape. Type specimens will be wrapped in their appropriate red banded sheets, while all the other specimens will be enclosed in vegetal paper, and genus folders. This will render these collections ready to be consulted by any researcher upon request.
Timetable:
The collection of Calendula specimens is presently enclosed in newspaper sheets where they have been press dried, and organized by taxon and collection numbers.
The first task is to choose the better duplicate (afterwards called original) available of each specimen, which will be done by the hired student, supervised by the applicant.
Secondly, the original specimen will be mounted on a standard herbarium size sheet of cartridge paper.
To each specimen it will also be glued a label with the appropriate field details (collector plus number, date, place of collection, habit and habitat) and identification. If necessary, small envelopes will also be added to achenes of leaves accidentally detached from the specimen.
Finally, the herbarium reference number will be added to the specimens, and they will be organized in species folders and orderly placed in parcels (pigeonholes).
It is estimated that a total of 20-25 working days (1,5 month pay) will be enough to mount and organize all the 523 specimens.

The herbarium of the university of Aveiro was founded in 1977, with an initial team that included the curator (Dr Ângelo Pereira), one main collector (António Marques) and one technician (Isabel Marques), which was uncharged of the mounting of the specimens and most of the cataloging work. Since then, the collections have grown to c. 22000 specimens plus 43000 duplicates. Its focus was originally the district of Aveiro, but this was rapidly extended to the remainder of the Portuguese territory. More recently, it was extended to other collections, including from abroad, like the 523 Calendula collections from the Iberian Peninsula, North of Africa (Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia) and the Canary Islands. However, the growing of the collection has not been supported by an equivalent growth of the staff. On the contrary, the original elements of the team have died without replacement, except for the curator (which is presently MSci Rosa Pinho). The most important gap is that we have no full-time technician to mount and catalog the new specimens entering the collection. If the cataloguing work is mostly done by the collector of each collection, mounting is a time-consuming task, that could more adequately be done by hiring a student, for example. Therefore, the main aim of this project is to hire a student (with a degree in biology) to mount the mentioned collections of Calendula, that were used for recent taxonomical revisions of the genus and include 8 type specimens.
