BASSA
Museo Civico di Bassano del Grappa
Objective:
First of all, the Museo Civico of the municipality of Bassano del Grappa (VI) needs a freezer where to place the Herbaria specimens, in order to inhibit the proliferation of possible parasites, since at the moment it is not adequately equipped to guarantee their proper conservation.
Secondly, it is necessary to start the digitalization of the recent Giuseppe Marchente botanical collection, in order to expand its use and to have an overall map of the botanical diversity at territorial level and its change over time.
Timetable:
The project includes the purchase of the freezer by June 2020, while the digitization process will be completed by September 2020 (about seven hundred pieces of the Herbarium Giuseppe Marchente).

Reviewer's name:
Collection Improvement (max. 120 points)

Facilitating access to the physical collections by digitization (e.g., data entry, setting up database structure with an outline of the platform to be used, purchasing equipment, and imaging specimens) – up to 30 points.
-
Enhancing physical collections by improving the conservation status of specimens in the herbarium (e.g., better folders, protecting covers, mounting paper, labeling, etc.) – up to 30 points.
-
Curating specimens (e.g., updating families, species identification, identifying types) – up to 20 points.
-
Increasing our understanding of the flora or funga by making new herbarium specimens available, such as processing of backlog or collecting and mounting of new specimens from understudied sites – up to 20 points.

Methods & Funding (max. 40 points)
-
Match between the proposed budget and methods for the aims described – up to 10 points.
-

Broader Impacts (max. 40 points)
-
Degree of regional importance of the collection or the taxonomic importance of the targeted collection – up to 10 points.
-
The project will yield durable benefits (specimens, digitized metadata, databases, websites) – up to 15 points.

Plan:
A suitable freezer will be requested; subsequently, the contents of the various Herbaria will be placed in the above-mentioned freezer on weekly shifts and then stored in special cells equipped with camphor as an additional deterrent for new parasites.
For the Giuseppe Marchente collection a specific digitization program will be prepared and the new data will be inserted on the net by a specialist, to give the possibility to carry out new studies and to compare it with other herbaria.
The Herbaria of the Museo Civico of Bassano del Grappa count about 28,000 sheets of various authors of the 19th century, which are housed in a deposit: Giambattista Brocchi is the oldest, Alberto Parolini already a collaborator of Brocchi, Giovanni Montini, Giuseppe Marchente and other minor collections. The Herbarium on which we would mainly intervene was organized in the 70s - 80s of the 20th century by Giuseppe Marchente (1910 - 1997). He was responsible for the recovery of the historical herbaria of the Museo Civico di Bassano del Grappa. He devoted himself on a voluntary basis to the important activity of conservative reorganization of these finds that were abandoned and in decay, returning them deservedly to the attention of the administration and the community.
Despite the work of these scholars, the collections of the Herbaria are still undervalued.
