Digital publication of the herbarium collection of the Botanical Garden of the Municipal Parks and Zoobotanical Foundation of Belo Horizonte, Brazil.

Cost (USD):
2000
BHZB
Botanical Garden of the Municipal Parks and Zoobotany Foundation
Objective:
The BHZB Herbarium has a collection of 16040 specimens, the most of the collection are from Minas Gerais, the state with the greatest diversity of flora in Brazil. More than 63% of the collection is exclusive to BHZB Herbarium and has around 11% that are endemic to Minas Gerais. Therefore, it is important to maintain and expand the availability of the BHZB collection to democratize access and increase the visibility of the herbarium. The funding will be applied to the digitization of approximately 50% of the collection, which will be made available in JABOT and speciesLink/CRIA.
Timetable:
The BHZB Herbarium previously obtained funding from CNPq to digitize the collection, but we managed to digitize only half of it. As we already have several instruments for this work, it is possible that in seven months our progress will be close to 100% digitization, as the herbarium continues to add new specimens. The Herbarium, created in 1993, has staff specialized in identification, preparation of exsiccates and digitization, according to international standards. The team is composed of the herbarium's curator, Inês R. Andrade, and staff members: Carla D. B. Carvalho, Carlos A. F. Junior, Fernanda N. A. Villani, Lauro M. Fraguas and Vinicius R. Bueno. The team will be responsible for training and coordinating the students. Funding from the IAPT is essential to continue this important work and make the images in the collection available. The execution phases will be:
One month to train the 2 scholarship holders for collecting, preserving and herborizing botanical materials, as well as general notions of taxonomy and systematics of the species in our collection.
Six months to make progress on digitizing the BHZB collection and publishing the photos on JABOT and speciesLink/CRIA.
Scoring Rubric
Reviewer's name:
Collection Improvement (max. 120 points)
-
Facilitating access to the physical collections by digitization (e.g., data entry, setting up database structure with an outline of the platform to be used, purchasing equipment, and imaging specimens) – up to 30 points.
-
Enhancing physical collections by improving the conservation status of specimens in the herbarium (e.g., better folders, protecting covers, mounting paper, labeling, etc.) – up to 30 points.
-
Curating specimens (e.g., updating families, species identification, identifying types) – up to 20 points.
-
Increasing our understanding of the flora or funga by making new herbarium specimens available, such as processing of backlog or collecting and mounting of new specimens from understudied sites – up to 20 points.
-
Securing collections by distribution of duplicates (or orphan collections) to other regional or international herbaria or shipping endangered collections to another herbarium – up to 20 points.

Methods & Funding (max. 40 points)
-
Match between the proposed budget and methods for the aims described – up to 10 points.
-
Perceived need, the extent to which the project will benefit from IAPT funding: e.g., due to active floristic work or contribution to poorly collected sites, due to threatened conditions of collections, and for the degree of involvement of others (outreach and education). We give more points for herbaria in low- and middle-income countries – up to 20 points.
-
Sharing duplicate specimens with other herbaria – up to 10 points.
This proposal scores:
/40
Broader Impacts (max. 40 points)
-
Degree of regional importance of the collection or the taxonomic importance of the targeted collection – up to 10 points.
-
The project will yield durable benefits (specimens, digitized metadata, databases, websites) – up to 15 points.
-
The project involves outreach/mentoring and broad dissemination – up to 15 points.

Plan:
The BHZB Herbarium collection has a regional focus and is one of the collections of the Botanical Garden of the Municipal Parks and Zoobotanical Foundation of Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil, and is freely accessible to the global community. The institution has a tradition of research and scientific dissemination, integrating various working groups for the management and conservation of biodiversity. Currently, we have approximately 16,040 registered species, but only around 50% are digitized. Although we have the structure and material for plants to be collected, dried, prepared, and stored under appropriate conditions, the team is insufficient to complete the entire task. Our priorities are:
To finalize the digitization of approximately 7,560 species, using a photographic station composed of a CANON EOS SL3 camera with an EF 50 F1.4 USM lens for photos with a resolution of 24.1 megapixels.
To publish the entire collection on the JABOT/JBRJ system (https://bhzb.jbrj.gov.br/v2/consulta.php) and the speciesLink/CRIA platform (http://inct.splink.org.br).
To improve and expedite the production of exsiccatae with the acquisition of a Zebra ZD220 thermal printer, to produce barcodes for application in the exsiccatae.
We intend to increase the number of people working in the herbarium, offering 2 graduate scholarships.
