Exploration, conservation, and digitalization of floristic diversity in hot spots in Guerrero
Mexico
Database, Digitally image, Process backlog, Ship, Conserve, Other
Cost (USD):
2000
FCQB
Universidad Autónoma de Guerrero
Objective:
Increase and improve the conservation, organization and accessibility of the collection of vascular and non-vascular plants of the FCQB Herbarium by collecting material in unstudied areas of the Guerrero state, such as the “Sierra Tecuani” Natural Protected Area, in addition to cleaning specimens, replacing mounting paper, sending duplicates to other collections and digitizing the collection for the creation of a database. This project seeks to maximize its impact on improving the collection, infrastructure and scientific dissemination.
Timetable:
Months 1-2: Process existing samples, clean specimens, and improve physical conservation (replace mounting paper, folders, and labels).
Months 3-4: Collect and mount new specimens from understudied sites (Montain zone and "Sierra Tecuani" Natural Protected Area).
Months 5-6: Begun with the digialization of specimens, create a digital database, and we will initiate the necessary steps to share the herbarium’s digital database on a global biodiversity platform, such as GBIF (Global Biodiversity Information Facility) or SEINet (Southwest Environmental Information Network). This will involve standardizing the metadata, ensuring compliance with platform requirements, and submitting the data for publication. By making the collection accessible through these platforms, we aim to contribute to global biodiversity research, facilitate data sharing among researchers, and increase the visibility of the FCQB Herbarium’s collections.
Month 7: Prepare and send duplicates to regional and international herbaria, establishing collaboration agreements.
Month 8: Conduct outreach activities, including workshops for students and volunteers, and publish results.
Scoring Rubric
Reviewer's name:
Collection Improvement (max. 120 points)
-
Facilitating access to the physical collections by digitization (e.g., data entry, setting up database structure with an outline of the platform to be used, purchasing equipment, and imaging specimens) – up to 30 points.
-
Enhancing physical collections by improving the conservation status of specimens in the herbarium (e.g., better folders, protecting covers, mounting paper, labeling, etc.) – up to 30 points.
-
Curating specimens (e.g., updating families, species identification, identifying types) – up to 20 points.
-
Increasing our understanding of the flora or funga by making new herbarium specimens available, such as processing of backlog or collecting and mounting of new specimens from understudied sites – up to 20 points.
-
Securing collections by distribution of duplicates (or orphan collections) to other regional or international herbaria or shipping endangered collections to another herbarium – up to 20 points.

Methods & Funding (max. 40 points)
-
Match between the proposed budget and methods for the aims described – up to 10 points.
-
Perceived need, the extent to which the project will benefit from IAPT funding: e.g., due to active floristic work or contribution to poorly collected sites, due to threatened conditions of collections, and for the degree of involvement of others (outreach and education). We give more points for herbaria in low- and middle-income countries – up to 20 points.
-
Sharing duplicate specimens with other herbaria – up to 10 points.
This proposal scores:
/40
Broader Impacts (max. 40 points)
-
Degree of regional importance of the collection or the taxonomic importance of the targeted collection – up to 10 points.
-
The project will yield durable benefits (specimens, digitized metadata, databases, websites) – up to 15 points.
-
The project involves outreach/mentoring and broad dissemination – up to 15 points.

Plan:
Improvement of the infrastructure. Since last year we have created savings among professors and students to improve the infrastructure of the herbarium and we are about to acquire a freezer for the treatment of the exsiccata, as well as for the fumigation of our facilities. With the present project we also intend to acquire basic equipment for digitalization and image capture of high quality specimens, as well as to replace mounting material in damaged specimens:
Collection of material. Field trips will be made to the mountain zone and to the Natural Protected Area “Sierra Tecuani” (zones with low representation of vouchers) where biological material of fertile plants will be collected. The samples will be processed, mounted and taxonomically determined with specialized bibliography. Duplicates will be sent to other herbaria, such as UAMIZ and MEXU.
Collection improvement. The specimens in the collection will be checked and cleaned, damaged or deteriorated material will be replaced (such as replacement of mounting cardboard, labels, among others). Duplicate material and vouchers of endangered sspecies will be sent to the previously mentioned herbaria
Digitalization of specimens. The intention is to acquire a camera and basic equipment (support, lighting) for the digitization of the collection in order to associate the herbarium to the national network of herbaria of Mexico and/or to Global Biodiversity Information Facility and share globally our database.
