Secrets in a packet: Revitalising the CAHUP Bryophyte Collection through Backlog Processing, Digitisation, and Exchanges

Republic of the Philippines

Curate specimens, Digitally image, Process backlog, Ship to another institution, Conserve

Cost (USD):

CAHUP

Botanical Herbarium, Museum of Natural History, University of the Philippines Los BaƱos

Objective:

This project aimed to revitalise the CAHUP Bryophyte Collection through: 1) the processing and accessioning of backlog collections, particularly those of type specimens, historical collections, and materials from under-explored areas in the Philippines; 2) curate specimens by updating scientific names, restoring herbarium packets and labels, and locating type specimens in the general collection; 3) digitise herbarium specimens and associated metadata; and 4) distribute duplicates to partner herbaria as part of specimen deposit or exchange program.

Timetable:

Objective 1 activities
a. Identification of specimens using microscopes and taxonomic keys. (Months 1 to 3)
b. Verification of type status through consultation with protologues. (Months 2 to 3)
c. Verification of scientific names through The Bryophyte Nomenclator (www.bryonames.org) as well as other taxonomic references. (Month 3)
d. Accession the specimens following UPLB MNH protocol. (Months 3 to 4)

Objective 2 activities
a. Verification of type status through consultation with protologues. (Months 3 to 4)
b. Verification of scientific names through consultation with The Bryophyte Nomenclator (www.bryonames.org) as well as other taxonomic references. (Months 4 to 5)
c. Update of the herbarium database in light of the aforementioned. (Months 6 to 7)
d. Restore herbarium packets and labels following UPLB MNH protocol. (Months 6 to 7)

Objective 3 activity: Specimen imaging following GLOBAL Bryophyte & Lichen Thematic Collections Network Digitization Workflow (Months 6 to 12)

Objective 4 activity: Communication with partner herbaria and mailing of specimens through post (Months 9 to 12)

Scoring Rubric

Reviewer's name:

Collection Improvement (max. 120 points)

  • Facilitating access to the physical collections by digitization (e.g., data entry, setting up database structure with an outline of the platform to be used, purchasing equipment, and imaging specimens) – up to 30 points.

  • Enhancing physical collections by improving the conservation status of specimens in the herbarium (e.g., better folders, protecting covers, mounting paper, labeling, etc.) – up to 30 points.

  • Curating specimens (e.g., updating families, species identification, identifying types) – up to 20 points.

  • Increasing our understanding of the flora or funga by making new herbarium specimens available, such as processing of backlog or collecting and mounting of new specimens from understudied sites – up to 20 points.

  • Securing collections by distribution of duplicates (or orphan collections) to other regional or international herbaria or shipping endangered collections to another herbarium – up to 20 points.

This proposal scores:

/120

Methods & Funding (max. 40 points)

  • Match between the proposed budget and methods for the aims described – up to 10 points.

  • Perceived need, the extent to which the project will benefit from IAPT funding: e.g., due to active floristic work or contribution to poorly collected sites, due to threatened conditions of collections, and for the degree of involvement of others (outreach and education). We give more points for herbaria in low- and middle-income countries – up to 20 points.

  • Sharing duplicate specimens with other herbaria – up to 10 points.

This proposal scores:

/40

Broader Impacts (max. 40 points)

  • Degree of regional importance of the collection or the taxonomic importance of the targeted collection – up to 10 points.

  • The project will yield durable benefits (specimens, digitized metadata, databases, websites) – up to 15 points.

  • The project involves outreach/mentoring and broad dissemination – up to 15 points.

Plan:

Objective 1
a. Identification of specimens: This will involve the mounting of specimens into microscope slides, examination under dissecting and compound microscopes, and use of taxonomic keys for identification.
b. Verification of type status through consultation with protologues. This will involve looking into old and recent publications concerning species names and their types, lectotypifications, and other pertinent literature.
c. Verification of scientific names through The Bryophyte Nomenclator (www.bryonames.org) as well as other taxonomic references. This will assure that the scientific name used at the time of specimen annotation is valid.
d. Accession the specimens following UPLB MNH protocol: placing the specimens in standard herbarium packets, designation of a unique accession number, and integration into the collection.

Objective 2
a. Verification of type status through consultation with protologues.
b. Verification of scientific names through consultation with The Bryophyte Nomenclator as well as other taxonomic references.
c. Update of the herbarium database in light of the aforementioned.
d. Restore herbarium packets and labels following UPLB MNH protocol.

Objective 3: Specimen imaging following GLOBAL Bryophyte & Lichen Thematic Collections Network Digitization Workflow, to assure that the digitisation effort follows a protocol used in major bryophyte collections.

Objective 4: Communication with partner herbaria and mailing of specimens through post.
