Objective:

-Standardize and homologate the database of the "Herbario Provincial Saile Echegaray” with the Darwin Core protocol used in all collections in the world.
-Perform the mounting and curing of herbarium specimens that require it.
-Start digitization of herbarium specimens from the HSESJ collection for later publication.

Timetable:

I Semester - 2022:
*Training of advanced students in the management and maintenance of the herbarium
*Homologation according to Darwin Core protocol of the existing database
*Review of collection specimens, label correction, determination validation, mounting and curing

II Semester - 2022:
*Training of advanced students in the management and maintenance of the herbarium
*Informatization of new herbarium specimens to the database
*Data processing and publication of database
*Digitization: photographic capture and image database construction

  • Facilitating access to the physical collections by digitization (e.g., data entry, setting up database structure with an outline of the platform to be used, purchasing equipment, and imaging specimens) – up to 30 points.

  • Enhancing physical collections by improving the conservation status of specimens in the herbarium (e.g., better folders, protecting covers, mounting paper, labeling, etc.) – up to 30 points.

  • Curating specimens (e.g., updating families, species identification, identifying types) – up to 20 points.

  • Increasing our understanding of the flora or funga by making new herbarium specimens available, such as processing of backlog or collecting and mounting of new specimens from understudied sites – up to 20 points.

  • Securing collections by distribution of duplicates (or orphan collections) to other regional or international herbaria or shipping endangered collections to another herbarium – up to 20 points.

Plan:

The "Saile Echegaray Provincial Herbarium" is the main botanical collection in the province of San Juan (Argentina), it has approximately 5000 specimens, of which the majority are vascular plants collected in the different biomes of the province.
The consultation of this Herbarium can only be done in person, by appointment, because there is no published online database or digitized herbarium specimens. People who need to work with the material from the collection must depend exclusively on the time availability of the herbarium staff (only 2 professionals) whose workload assigned to this task is low.
In recent times, there has been an urgent need to update the database according to international standards, in addition to making it possible to access it without being physically present in the Herbarium's facilities. For this reason, it is recognized as a priority in this project to digitize herbarium specimens, cure herbarium specimens and publish the database of the "Saile Echegaray Provincial Herbarium" to be able to communicate it to different areas that require them.
In order to meet the objectives of this proposal, we will be guided by the international protocols of Darwin Core and the Global Biodiversity Information Facility under the guidance of Dr. Anabela Plos, Administrator of the Argentine Node of GBIF, for the digitization and computerization of the data and images corresponding to each of the copies of the HSESJ collection.
