Maintainment and increment of the vascular and non-vascular collection of FCQB Herbarium.
Mexico
Database, Conserve
Cost (USD):
2000
FCQB
Universidad Autónoma de Guerrero
Objective:
Maintain and increase the vascular and non-vascular specimens in the FCQB herbarium. Which was built with collects of students in the final years of their undergraduate studies. Also, promote the interest in non-vascular plants, a poorly studied group in the state, in students as the community as well, to collect Antocerotophyta, Jungermanniales, and Bryophytes; and to build capacities for more biology students. Also, we want to work together within communities in the center of the country to promote the importance of these plants.
Timetable:
The fumigation is urgent as also the installation of the Freezer to avoid future pest problems. Also, the installation of the Bryophytes cabinet and the acquisition of field material, identification key, and microscopes, (by June 2024). In the same month and successive months, we´ll have field trips to collect specimens at the Ecotourism center of the Ñuu Savi community (Mixteca) and tropical deciduous forest in the Zopilote canyon. The new equipment (Stereomicroscope) and identification key, will be used for taxonomic determination.
The FCQB herbarium receives undergraduate students interested in the ecology, taxonomy, and biology of spermatophytes, Monilophytes, Lycophytes, and recently, Bryophytes. Nowadays four students have started their thesis about Ferns, Antocerotophytes, and Marchantiophytes, and one on vascular flora of the Central part of Guerrero; our current three thesis students (two focus on spermatophytes, one on ferns), will contribute to identifying the flora of the Ñuu Savi community. We hope to close the first cycle of collections in October.
Scoring Rubric
Reviewer's name:
Collection Improvement (max. 120 points)
-
Facilitating access to the physical collections by digitization (e.g., data entry, setting up database structure with an outline of the platform to be used, purchasing equipment, and imaging specimens) – up to 30 points.
-
Enhancing physical collections by improving the conservation status of specimens in the herbarium (e.g., better folders, protecting covers, mounting paper, labeling, etc.) – up to 30 points.
-
Curating specimens (e.g., updating families, species identification, identifying types) – up to 20 points.
-
Increasing our understanding of the flora or funga by making new herbarium specimens available, such as processing of backlog or collecting and mounting of new specimens from understudied sites – up to 20 points.
-
Securing collections by distribution of duplicates (or orphan collections) to other regional or international herbaria or shipping endangered collections to another herbarium – up to 20 points.

Methods & Funding (max. 40 points)
-
Match between the proposed budget and methods for the aims described – up to 10 points.
-
Perceived need, the extent to which the project will benefit from IAPT funding: e.g., due to active floristic work or contribution to poorly collected sites, due to threatened conditions of collections, and for the degree of involvement of others (outreach and education). We give more points for herbaria in low- and middle-income countries – up to 20 points.
-
Sharing duplicate specimens with other herbaria – up to 10 points.
This proposal scores:
/40
Broader Impacts (max. 40 points)
-
Degree of regional importance of the collection or the taxonomic importance of the targeted collection – up to 10 points.
-
The project will yield durable benefits (specimens, digitized metadata, databases, websites) – up to 15 points.
-
The project involves outreach/mentoring and broad dissemination – up to 15 points.

Plan:
To maintain the health of the collection, a freezer is required to sterilize specimens collected before inclusion in the collection, as well as to treat specimens with fungi. Additionally, carry out general fumigation. It is necessary to acquire sulfated cardboard to replace damaged ones in collection specimens, as well as to assemble new specimens to be included in the collection, and to acquire acid-free paper for non-vascular samples.
Originally, the herbarium was developed for vascular plants regional. Now, including non-vascular plants, special furniture is required for these specimens, and also the Bryophyte Guide of Tropical America (Gradstein et. al., 2001), for genus identification. We have the first 120 bryophytes collected. Those that require, for their inclusion in the collection, a suitable drawer for their preservation.
We are interested in the growth of the collection increasing the list of species it currently includes, as well as expanding spatial coverage. We have made agreements with mestizo and indigenous communities to contribute to the knowledge of their native flora through the identification of collections that will be deposited in FCQB and the development of field guides that contribute to their ecotourism and environmental education activities.
We have seven undergraduate students interested in strengthening their skills in taxonomic identification and contributing to the knowledge of the different groups of wild flora in the state of Guerrero.
