Enhancing conditions of processing of backlogged specimens and their conservation in the UCH Herbarium

Panamá

Database, Process backlog, Conserve, Other

Cost (USD):

2000

UCH

The Herbarium of Autonomous University of Chiriqui

Objective:

1. Increase knowledge of Panama's flora and funga by processing botanical samples and incorporating records into the UCH Herbarium collection.
2. Continue organizing, conserving and maintaining the Herbarium collection.
3. Sharing duplicate specimens with PMA and SCZ herbaria.

Timetable:

month 1-2
Work to improve the current conditions of botanical samples through cleaning and disinfection of the collection and processing of 500 specimens

month 3-4
Labeling of herbarium shelves and genus folders and processing of 500 specimens

month 5-6
Collection maintenance through specimen review, specimen reinforcement, and silica gel placement and processing of 500 specimens

month 7-8
Processing of 500 specimens and contributing to specimen exchange activities with other herbaria by sending 500 specimens to the PMA and SCZ herbarium.

Scoring Rubric

Reviewer's name:

Collection Improvement (max. 120 points)

  • Facilitating access to the physical collections by digitization (e.g., data entry, setting up database structure with an outline of the platform to be used, purchasing equipment, and imaging specimens) – up to 30 points.

  • Enhancing physical collections by improving the conservation status of specimens in the herbarium (e.g., better folders, protecting covers, mounting paper, labeling, etc.) – up to 30 points.

  • Curating specimens (e.g., updating families, species identification, identifying types) – up to 20 points.

  • Increasing our understanding of the flora or funga by making new herbarium specimens available, such as processing of backlog or collecting and mounting of new specimens from understudied sites – up to 20 points.

  • Securing collections by distribution of duplicates (or orphan collections) to other regional or international herbaria or shipping endangered collections to another herbarium – up to 20 points.

Methods & Funding (max. 40 points)

  • Match between the proposed budget and methods for the aims described – up to 10 points.

  • Perceived need, the extent to which the project will benefit from IAPT funding: e.g., due to active floristic work or contribution to poorly collected sites, due to threatened conditions of collections, and for the degree of involvement of others (outreach and education). We give more points for herbaria in low- and middle-income countries – up to 20 points.

  • Sharing duplicate specimens with other herbaria – up to 10 points.

Broader Impacts (max. 40 points)

  • Degree of regional importance of the collection or the taxonomic importance of the targeted collection – up to 10 points.

  • The project will yield durable benefits (specimens, digitized metadata, databases, websites) – up to 15 points.

  • The project involves outreach/mentoring and broad dissemination – up to 15 points.

Plan:

1. the herbarium researchers carry out fieldwork, develop workshops, receive donations of samples and supports students who develop theses. These activities generate botanical material that must be processed. For the inclusion of vouchers in the collection, it is necessary to acquire inputs. It is expected to include at least 2000 plant vouchers in the collection.
2. Since the herbarium is relatively small in terms of the number of specimens housed in the collection, it is essential that as the collection grows, the sections within the different taxonomic groups are properly identified. Currently, this identification is done by labelling the sections and folders within each section. Having the necessary material for this activity will ensure that the collection increases with adequate organization. This will also facilitate key activities such as research, curation, and disinfection; contributing to the proper management and structured growth of the collection.
3. The UCH herbarium has established links with other renowned national herbaria such as the PMA and the SCZ. We maintain specimen exchange programs with both herbaria, where mainly the UCH receives material. In this instance, we propose that through financing from the IAPT the necessary funds be obtained to send 500 specimens mainly to the SCZ, a herbarium where we have sent fewer vouchers.
