Objective:

To upgrade the computer hardware of the Herbarium to start the creation of a database of geobotanical descriptions and to complete the database of vascular plants.
Herbarium SASY is one of the oldest in the North-East of Russia. The Herbarium reflects the flora of Yakutia whose climate differs from climate of other regions by sharp continentality and its territory is located in the zone of continuous distribution of permafrost.

1. Purchase of Computers and Software, their installation (before field work, expeditions) – April-May 2020;
2. Duration of work on the creation of the Herbarium database – whole 2020;
3. The start of works on creation of the database on geobotanical descriptions (after field works, expeditions and processing of the collected material) – November, 2020.

For the purpose to achieve our project objective we are planning to purchase new computers and software. Currently we use computers which were purchased in the early 2000s. They are morally and technically obsolete. Besides computers, we would like to purchase a license for the new version of Microsoft Office. It has Microsoft Access in addition to Microsoft Excel. Data from Excel can be easily imported to Access and from Access to other database programs. This will greatly facilitate further work on the creation of databases.
At the present time the database of vascular plants includes 70% of specimens in the collection and was created using Excel. There are 81800 specimens in the Herbarium: Algae - about 4000; Fungi – 750; Lichens – 5000; Marchantiophyta – 2000; Mosses – 15000; Higher vascular plants – 55,000. The collection contains plants and mycobiota of the temperate Northern and Arctic latitudes, peculiar elements of the steppe flora associated with the steppes of Central Asia; sandy “deserts” (tukulans) which are visually similar to the deserts of Central Asia; meadow and forest vegetation – alases, charans, etc. Researchers are still discovering and describing new to science plant species in Yakutia. Besides plants and fungi specimens, the Herbarium also contains geobotanical descriptions, field notebooks of many researchers who have worked since the founding of our Institute. We would like to convert them into digital format and create a phytocenological database.
