Preliminary checklist of Lycophyta and Monilophyta of the Valle del Cauca department, Colombia
Colombia
Database, Digitally image, Process backlog
Cost (USD):
2000
CUVC
Universidad del Valle
Objective:
1. General Objective
To generate a preliminary checklist of the Licophyta and Monilophyta of the of Valle del Cauca department, based on the collections housed at the CUVC herbarium.
Specific Objectives
- Increase the herbarium database by adding ca. 2000 specimens of Lycophyta and Monilophyta housed at the CUVC herbarium.
- Increase the herbarium collection by mounting, including and databasing 500 new collections of Lycophyta and Monilophyta.
Timetable:
Months 1-2
We have already located 500 unprocessed Lycophyta and Monilophyta collections. During the first two months we will organize and mount these collections.
Months 3-7
During months 3 to 7 we will database the 500 new specimens plus ca. 2500 already including at CUVC herbarium. The digitization will be done following the CUVC herbarium protocol using the software BRAHMS.
Months 8-9. We will photograph one specimen per species, which will be part of the webpage which is currently being design.
Months 10-12
Finally, we will generate a preliminary checklist of Lycophyta and Monilophyta which will be reviewed by the specialists Alejandra Vasco and Weston Testo with who we are collaborating in this project.
Scoring Rubric
Reviewer's name:
Collection Improvement (max. 120 points)
-
Facilitating access to the physical collections by digitization (e.g., data entry, setting up database structure with an outline of the platform to be used, purchasing equipment, and imaging specimens) – up to 30 points.
-
Enhancing physical collections by improving the conservation status of specimens in the herbarium (e.g., better folders, protecting covers, mounting paper, labeling, etc.) – up to 30 points.
-
Curating specimens (e.g., updating families, species identification, identifying types) – up to 20 points.
-
Increasing our understanding of the flora or funga by making new herbarium specimens available, such as processing of backlog or collecting and mounting of new specimens from understudied sites – up to 20 points.
-
Securing collections by distribution of duplicates (or orphan collections) to other regional or international herbaria or shipping endangered collections to another herbarium – up to 20 points.
This proposal scores:
/120
Methods & Funding (max. 40 points)
-
Match between the proposed budget and methods for the aims described – up to 10 points.
-
Perceived need, the extent to which the project will benefit from IAPT funding: e.g., due to active floristic work or contribution to poorly collected sites, due to threatened conditions of collections, and for the degree of involvement of others (outreach and education). We give more points for herbaria in low- and middle-income countries – up to 20 points.
-
Sharing duplicate specimens with other herbaria – up to 10 points.
This proposal scores:
/40
Broader Impacts (max. 40 points)
-
Degree of regional importance of the collection or the taxonomic importance of the targeted collection – up to 10 points.
-
The project will yield durable benefits (specimens, digitized metadata, databases, websites) – up to 15 points.
-
The project involves outreach/mentoring and broad dissemination – up to 15 points.

Plan:
The Department of Valle del Cauca is third in diversity of plants in Colombia. Most of the records about the flora of Valle del Cauca are housed at The Universidad del Valle Herbarium (CUVC), which has around 76.000 specimens. However, we estimate we have around 30.000 unmounted and unprocessed specimens. Our work has focused mainly on the study of the Angiosperm flora of Valle del Cauca and in particular the relictual flora of the dry forest in the geographic Valley of the Cauca river, one of the most endangered ecosystems in Colombia. However, the CUVC herbarium has accumulated important collections from other biological groups like lichens and Monilophyta.
Between 2016 and 2018 we started the digitization of the CUVC collections focusing on the Angiosperms. Most of the work is done by undergrad and grad students payed from grants like this one. For this project, we have already identified ca. 500 unprocessed collections of Lycophyta and Monilophyta, and we estimate there are at least 2500 already included in the collection but not database. These collections are organized by families and most of them have been curated by specialists which has allowed us to identify several new records for the Department. We will train two undergrads to mount, digitize and photograph 500 of these unprocessed specimens and to digitize 2000 additional mounted specimens. Finally, we will produce a preliminary checklist of these groups in the Department
