Objective:
We plan to begin the digitization of herbarium specimens deposited in MAG and then publish datasets in open databases. The first objective of this project is bar-coding of vascular plant collection. Next, we plan to start creating images of some groups of vascular plants and place datasets on the Moscow Digital Herbarium web-platform. Digitization of our collection (MAG) will fill taxonomic and geographic gaps in freely accessible data relating to national and regional biodiversity.
Timetable:
Three senior researcher of the laboratory of botany IBPN FEB RAS (PhD. Maria Khoreva, PhD. Olga Mochalova and PhD.Elena Andrianova (member of Taxon)) and two laboratory assistant will participate in the work.

March - April 2020 - purchase of equipment for barcoding and digitization, beginning of barcoding and optimization of the procedure.
May– October - barcoding and digitizing herbarium specimens (type collection, Orchidaceae, Corydalis, Botrychium, Potamogeton, Utricularia, etc.).
November-December: sending datasets to the Moscow Digital Herbarium.
During 2020, considering the adjustment of equipment and the development of an optimal operating mode, we will barcode at least 40,000 samples and digitize at least 5,000 samples.

The Нerbarium of the Institute of the Biological Problems of the North FEB RAS, Magadan (MAG) – one of the most remote and difficult to visit herbaria in Russia. It includes about 110000 specimens of more than 1700 species of vascular plants from Extreme North-East of Asia and East Siberia. It is interesting for botanists due to the large number of species from the Asian part of Beringia.
We see the following steps to digitize the collection.
1. We need to purchase a printer and supplies for printing bar codes. Barcoding will be carried out by herbarium staff.
2. Stick bar codes (ID) on vascular plant specimens (about or more than 110000), starting with type specimens (about 40 taxa).
3. Next, in the same time with bar coding and later, we plan to start creating images of some groups of vascular plants using a SLR camera, following international standards for online placement: a ruler, color scale, 600 dpi (tiff and jpg), the presence of a bar code, which will be used to generate unique image file name.
4. Creation or adjustment of the existing database of labels using the unique ID with the herbarium acronym (bar-code).
5. Georeferencing.
6. Placement datasets on the Moscow Digital Herbarium web-platform https://plant.depo.msu.ru/?d=P as the separate category (MAG). We plan to develop Digital Herbarium IBPN FEB RAS (MAG) on our website in future to provide freely accessible data.
